We need more optimism in technology, more looking forward and inspiring the next generation to leave their mark; not pining for a past that’s already been here.
Nobody younger than an older millennial who grew up learning computers via Windows 95 has any interest in “retvrning” to this ethos of computing. Hell, I just described myself and even I could care less about this project other than a passing “huh that’s kinda neat” which is a rather tepid response proportional to the work that has been invested here.
There are far more interesting projects rethinking the OS right now that are actually trying their hand at unique architectures. This is just an homage to nostalgia (a technically impressive one, but still nothing inspiring here). The saddest part to me is I’m not sure the graybeards on HN will ever really get that.

Beeper is an app that unifies all the messaging protocols you mentioned (and others) into a single app. They are not introducing another protocol.
Universal in this context is referring to the ability to use a single app across protocols rather than the ability to use a single app across platforms.

An “about face” is a term commonly called in military cadence indicating the soldier should turn around, completing a 180 degree turn. So when used colloquially it means someone or some business had a complete change of mind on some topic. In this case, Microsoft has changed their approach to repairability.

Mastodon ain’t it because the exact minute a minimum wage Geek Squad tech has to explain to a sorority group the reason they can’t follow each other is because they are using different federated instances is the exact minute mastodon fails to gain any mainstream appeal. It will likely always captivate some niche of users looking for a slice of the nostalgic, techie internet (Mastodon will remain an HN darling no doubt), but a Twitter drop in, it is not.

Hello HN! I have a long background in tinkering with development, but I never really sat down to learn it in a way that could get me hired. Part of the issue is because while programming languages can be picked up quite easily by me, their tool chains and all the surrounding dev ops type work is not. I’m just looking for some guidance on where to focus time and energy and what development language ecosystem I should ultimately adhere to. JavaScript as an ecosystem has long seemed to be the pinnacle of employability right now thanks to the sheer number of frameworks that allow it to be implemented for nearly anything these days, but I just feel like I really missed the boat there: While a new generation of devs was busy with JS, I was teaching myself Python and the ecosystem around JS exploded and is now just very difficult to break into and play catch-up. Rust seems like an interesting focus for me potentially (I always liked C/C++ and a modern successor to the venerable systems level languages of yesterday is exciting to me). Swift also seems interesting: Philosophically I love building and using native software on a platform and iOS/Mac development seems like a solid breadwinning career that doesn’t need an immense amount of educational effort to find some success in.
I suppose my true question is twofold and I hope it may also help some others:
1. Thanks to ignorant parenting and a series of bad choices in my life over the years, I lack serious direction right now. I’ve had very well paying jobs, but I hate what I can do for work right now and want to pivot. What can I learn quickly that pays the bills and gets my foot in the door of development? One thing I will say: I prefer the cutting edge and the risks it brings. I have always lived there precariously and would like to continue to do so.
2. Is there a certification I should also focus on? I hear extremely mixed signals on this in the wild. I hold several unrelated certifications in adjacent (still technical) fields and I must say they’ve never really helped me in a practical way other than checking off a box for various employers.
Thanks for any suggestions and guidance

In my experience, the clubs cater to a niche. They’re effectively a kink in and of themselves and there’s a very explicit innuendo that sex is to be had on premise. Nude beaches on the other hand are a casual exploration of being clotheless. And while sexuality plays a part, it is not the focus of the experience and is often generally discouraged. I think nude beaches are cultural and thus more prone to the ebb and flow of said culture. Swingers clubs are a fetish and will exist regardless of culture as long as there are people with the kink.

Can someone here more up to date than I on the subject give me a good jumping off place to see the real research on vaping vs smoking nicotine?
Last I heard vaping was generally considered to be safer overall because it lacked the extra carcinogens found in cigarettes, but it came out in the wash as people tend to vape far more frequently than they used to smoke and vapes are also a more direct punch of nicotine.
I’ve heard that a pipe is probably the best way to smoke if you have to do it: Tends to have a more pleasant smell to those around you, is a much purer tobacco product, and it generally isn’t inhaled. I think pipes raise the rate of various mouth cancers though.

I think it’s usually better to accept someone’s words at face value than to attempt to infer deeper meaning. Ballmer has gone on to say that was one of his biggest mistakes and history agrees.
Regardless, there’s many examples of people throughout history finding no value in seemingly pointless technologies only to be proven wrong so I believe the point the quote still stands. I suppose I could always just link to the infamous Dropbox post here instead…
