That's a very large question. I'll keep the answer as short as I can:
* politically, we have a unified economic policy that is working wonders. The Brussels Effect is a thing. But, we don't have a unified foreign and defence policies, which partially made Ukraine War possible, and is making a Russian invasion further in Europe a distinct possibility.
* however, economically, the market is not really completely unified yet, especially for digital services, but for many other branches of economy as well. I can drive through 5 countries in a day, and my Netflix and Play Store selection will be different in every one. That doesn't make any sense.

Which is why I still think that the only way forward is that the EU becomes a country of its own. I'm aware that's deeply unpopular, partially due to The forrogn influence, but thr alternative is catastrophic - stagnation and letting US, China and Russia dictate our way of life.

Not the EU, but I once accidentally entered Switzerland in the Zürich airport. The passport counter was unmanned and the doorway next to it was open, so I assumed there is another checkpoint somewhere further.
When a guy started chasing after me 30 seconds later I realized my assumption was wrong. But there really wasn't a way to know.

Russia's goal is direct annexation of about quarter of the Ukrainian territory and installing a lifelong puppet regime to control the other three quarters. Ukrainians stand to lose not just their voice and any semblance of economic prosperity, but also their very identity.
With the exception of extreme cases like Gaza, it doesn't get more binary than that.

> It seems quite premature to say that. We're 3 to 4 years into the LLM revolution and the rate of progress is still impressive.
When we were 3 to 4 years into mobile phone revolution it was already abundantly clear that it's changing the way people leave.
Ditto when mobile phones became smartphones, and for many other tech items we got in the past decades.
As for LLMs... outside of a few precious professions you could live your life and not notice they are there.

The toys are the problem because there are so many being imported they can't possibly control them all.
And if the EU tries to do something structural about it the backlash is enormous - look at that 3 euro fee for packages for example.

The LLM might change the economy of this, but I doubt it.
I tend to believe that the engineering culture you describe will end up producing similar or, as Joel postulates, an even worse result, just dressed up in a modern stack.
If the technical leadership remains the very same one that enabled such a culture, I don't see them being able to suddenly produce a genuinely better software product only because an LLM is in a picture - especially considering how easy it is to convince an LLM that your idea is the best one.

> and that got me thinking that there's potentially a different type of gambling app that ignores the money and is more of a social/prediction-making platform
We have that in the Netherlands and we do it massively for every World Cup and Euro. The app my friend groups are on, Scorito, has 1.5 million competitors for the current WC, in the country of 18 million, and that's not the only app.
Normally a group would make a small buy in, like €5, where the winner takes all, but this year the legal department at work forbade that, se that sort of gambling Is actual illegal.
