Government is not great at picking up or creating ideas. Academia has to lead in that and then show government why it would be best for the nation to fund those. The government is good at long term funding for ideas that may not be the best for private sector right away but it should not be creating ideas themselves otherwise you would get things like Lysenkoism.

It is a different mindset and they are happy with what they are doing. I come from India where there is a ton of that labor. When I lived there, I had a couple of full time house help, supplemented by cook etc as needed. They had plenty of time by themselves. They would genuinely just zone out when they had free time, even significantly long. THey liked the easiness of the job, and the fact that once it is over, it is just over. No need to think about tomorrow, take your work in your head etc. A lot of the world's people are like that, maybe even a significant majority.

I don't even live in a super rural area, but if you think you could just walk a couple of kms in a couple of foot of snow to get something like a bookcase and bring it over is hilarious. Also, I would rather not receive packages for my neighbors, and I assume they wouldn't for me either. Ring works fine, I don't share the footage but I feel it is a cost of living in high crime regions.

Would be important to see how that number is being computed? If it is the amount of meat sold divided by number of people it may be misleading since there is a fair amount of wastage particularly in places like schools etc with kids filling plates that are never consumed.

Charlie and Jamie had always sort of assumed that there was some grown-up in charge of the financial system whom they had never met; now, they saw there was not.
-Michael Lewis, The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine
I've often seen this in traders who get outrageously successful with a particular strategy at a particular point in time. Their brain overfits seeing that pattern at times when it really doesn't apply. The smart ones manage to get out before losing everything, the not so smart ones end up where they were before the success. It is like a lottery winner who 'reinvests' all his winnings back into lotteries.
