I hate that dialog, but I found out that you can just tap the yubikey anyway (before clicking) and it'll skip the step of "no, I don't want to scan a QR code with my iPhone"

My assumption was that WhatsApp was heuristically detecting the lack of full contacts access. I figured they looked at the number of contacts to down from a couple hundred (pre-iOS 18) to 5, and assumed I limited access. However, it could totally be a detectable API response to the app as well.

I think one of my personal issues with allowing Meta to access these private APIs is that they may not take "don't allow" for an answer.

I have WhatsApp to talk to some family and I recently disabled allowing all contacts in iOS 18. WhatsApp now has a persistent notification at the top of messages to "Allow All Contacts".

If Apple allows users to choose whether or not to give Meta access, and users choose "no", Meta can lock them out of the service entirely (e.g., "you can't use this Meta Quest headset without allowing access to your messages").

That being said, Apple is definitely fighting for its own interests here as well. It would obviously benefit them to sell their own watches, headsets, earbuds, etc.

I believe the point OP is trying to make is, Google Search and Google Ads are a better product _because_ they're a monopoly.

For both search and ads, user data is what improves the quality and revenue earned. Microsoft, with its small percentage of search queries overall, doesn't have that data and could never get as good as Google in those markets.

I think yes and no for Apple. It's certainly making a ton of money off of each of its devices (Watch, iPad, Mac, etc.), but none of those devices (with the exception of the Mac, probably) would sell as well without the iPhone's ecosystem.

In some hypothetical universe where the Watch and iPad were from distinct companies, they might have to force interoperability with other products like the Pixel or Galaxy Watch to make the iPhone a compelling product.

unrelated, but can every news site please build a lite version? This opened so fast and was so easy to read. I forgot how nice websites could be with HTML plus some mild CSS.

In the context of their blog post, it's assumed that the reader has some knowledge of web technologies — if you can print data to your own webpage, you can also exfiltrate it.

It's not reasonable to expect the author to explain _every_ underlying technology involved since that was likely not the scope of the post.

The new iPhone ships with a USB 2.0 cable, it does data transfer, just not at USB 3 speeds

I don't think it's unreasonable for an executive in the CISO position to advocate for better cybersecurity practices such as up-to-date software. If every executive exclusively worried about ROI, we'd have a bunch of CFOs running security teams.
