I wish Freud was alive today. I can't help but think that the hysterics manifested in mainstream or social media are not actually real, that people wouldn't make such illogical steps if they were alone in an island. Instead they seem to be reactions , rooted in something deeper somewhere that's causing mass hysterias and delusions. It does manifest in the shifting ways of life too, the lack of sex, the lack of humor and the limited ambition shown by the 1-2 latest generations.
I do love Taibbi's writing, even though i think he spends too much time criticising things that soon won't matter

Social media, if anything, played a positive role and showed its strengths. Thanks to early warners, some people managed to keep their sanity, some others found flaws in studies, some others were warning people while the media was being partisan, some others taught people how to behave while government and the media were delirious about going/not going to protests/rallies etc. The "media of record" will never admit it, but the internet/social media proved that "access to multifaceted information" dominates over "parroting the elites". People are learning to distrust the mainstream elites, and that's a good thing.

too long to read ;
balaji has a beef with mainstream journalists since many months ago, and probably rightly so. I can't help but feel however that this whole outrage is covert advertising for Clubhouse which (even though i am not famous enough to use) seems basically a repackaging of the decades-old concept of phone hotlines.
That said, balaji is right, the media overplayed their role as arbiters of truth and are now losing. I d trust my twitter feed better than any paper.

There is no middle ground -- WFH is self-reinforcing trend, because offices are much less useful when they are half-empty and all processes have go online. As soon as some coworkers move, others follow. If people start working 2-3 days at home ... they start to think about moving somewhere better. I wonder what is the endgame of this rearrangement? Perhaps nomadism will become common? But in that case, cities will lose even more cohesion than they ve lost so far. If we take away the work factor, the question "where do i/my family live" becomes much more open-ended. Obvious choice #1 is near extended family. What else motivates people to move?

It seems like 2005 is 1000 years away. There 's no way today you can launch a silly idea like twitter or groupon and expect it to go anywhere. It won't , there is no money to make through advertising, acquiring users means paying levies to google, users' attention is oversaturated and impossible to attract, the tech press is too busy cancelling people small or big, users can't handle an interface that requires more than scrolling, techies care more about the language you use rather than if your product works etc etc. Walls, walls, paywalls, concentration, iron grips is all that's in the horizon. It seems like, out of a million different ideas, well-funded tech has decided to reinvent computers as televisions. Will computer tech become fun again, or one is better seeking greener paths elsewhere?

Design is not an optimization procedure like chip design. It's dominated by trends, like fashion. There is a small subset of people who care about optimal design, which measures things like perceptual reaction time etc. That's the military
