These bits of knowledge are becoming less useful to me now that AI is doing a lot of the work.

Blood pressure varies significantly throughout the day and is often measured incorrectly at doctors offices. It's a good idea to get a home cuff BP machine and keep track of it yourself after reading up on how to use the machine. Otherwise you might get recommended medicine incorrectly, or you could get a false sense of security.

New comment by bufordtwain in "It's a shame what's happened to radio"

bufordtwain — Wed, 22 Jul 2026 17:03:34 +0000

Lin Brehmer of WXRT Chicago was really good, he died not too long ago though. Since then I almost never turn the radio on in the car. Iggy pop does a great show on BBC radio 6 (online) and he plays good music but his many anecdotes and opinions are what really keep me listening.

New comment by bufordtwain in "Coding agents have replaced every framework I used"

bufordtwain — Sat, 07 Feb 2026 16:40:15 +0000

I didn't fully realize how much pain there was until I started delegating the coding to AI. It's very freeing. Unfortunately I think this will soon lead to mass layoffs.

New comment by bufordtwain in "Perl's decline was cultural"

bufordtwain — Sat, 06 Dec 2025 18:34:28 +0000

I thought its decline was due to Perl's confusing syntax. That's what caused me to move away from it anyway.

New comment by bufordtwain in "Beetroot juice lowers blood pressure in older people by changing oral microbiome"

I wonder if they could test this by comparing blood pressures of older folks in Australia with those in other countries since I hear they really like beetroot there :)

I'd guess maybe 10-20% improvement for me.

New comment by bufordtwain in "Do you want to be doing this when you're 50? (2012)"

bufordtwain — Sat, 22 Feb 2025 18:29:05 +0000

Late 50's and still enjoying it. Are there some frustrating days? Sure. But overall it's fine and is relatively well paid. It helps to have one or two co-workers that you get along with and can joke with. At this age you get random aches and pains that keep popping up which make me appreciate my desk job.

New comment by bufordtwain in "In Colorado, a marriage of solar energy and farming"

bufordtwain — Sat, 04 Jan 2025 16:15:04 +0000

I've been interested to see some small (1 acre-ish) solar panel installations popping up on local farmland near me in Northwest Indiana. I'm a bit surprised because although we get quite a few sunny days it's nowhere near Colorado levels of sun. So I guess the economics must be getting to the point where it's either profitable now or is expected to be profitable soon.

I've also noticed that they give you a very short time to explain your problem and symptoms and it's not unusual for them to be misinterpreted and/or misunderstood. Sometimes assumptions are made and the doctor gets an incorrect picture in their head. It's a bit like when someone gets interviewed for a newspaper story and when the story is published it has obvious errors.
