I am surprised that Firefox freely allows access to the clipboard. I'm using Brave and there's an explicit permission for it that is disallowed by default.

Go is designed to be easy to read and easy to write. err != nil is not hard to read. If you don't like the repetition, it simply isn't the language for you. I'm perfectly happy with how Go does it. I do not want the language morphing into another Rust.

2000s kid, I first used something similar to LOGO at school, if you can consider that programming. I initially taught myself programming/scripting by writing Windows batch scripts. Scratch was introduced in my teens at school but by then I was far beyond block programming.

I hated Scratch. I saw it as childish and simplistic. I wanted to play with the big boy stuff.

Shell security is a joke anyway, there's plenty of other things to be cynical about than an install script. Such as how I can elevate privileges on your machine by phishing your password with a fake sudo binary in $PATH.

By being protective over our ideas we're admitting that China will do it cheaper and faster than us. Why can't we aim to beat them instead?

There's this kind of crab bucket mentality where in the West we feel like we need to be ahead of China no matter what. That's not going to last if all we have is trade secrets keeping us in the lead. Maybe we should get back to innovating. Reduce the amount of red tape and stamp out rent seeking behaviour. UK's economic growth this year is projected to be just 0.5%. China's will be ~5%.

Frankly I have lost faith in our leadership. I really don't see how we can catch up at this point. Might be time to learn some Mandarin.

We could easily reduce the risks but we're collectively too lazy to do it. Stop feeding antibiotics to animals, stop giving out strong antibiotics without supervision, sanction third world countries who do not put restrictions on access to antibiotics.

When YouTube stops working with ad blockers, assuming it cannot be circumvented, it will be the end of my YouTube-watching days. I already stopped using Reddit when they killed off Apollo. These companies are doing me a favour by removing these time wasting activities from my life.

I trialed YouTube Music recently, potentially willing to hand over my wallet, but the app is unimpressive.

The complaints about systemd timers seem strange. To me, they're a sysadmin's dream to work with. I can see exactly when the last trigger was, when the next one will be, and I can test that the unit will work properly when it fires. And I don't have to remember cron syntax.

As for them not supporting email, if you really need to you can add an OnFailure= to the service unit to send one.

Under 25 seems a bit young, and I say this as a 22-year-old. There isn't enough life experience there to understand the complexities of the real world.

But we do need younger people in politics. UK parliament is overwhelmingly old, rich, eurosceptic people. Funny how there's no diversity where it really matters.

There is also a huge portion of programmers who want to be on an assembly line. They don't care about their profession, they don't strive to improve at their craft, they don't read stuff on HN. They're simply there for the money. Since quality requires active effort in software, I think this group has an oversized responsibility for tech debt.

Case in point: frontend and the shit show that's become.
