There was a Romanian economist who was able to exploit several lotteries around the world. He essentially bought every combination to lotteries where the payout was higher than the cost. Logistical nightmare.

“Unproven”, I don’t get how anyone can use LLMs and come away with this opinion. There is simply no better way to do a fuzzy search than by typing a vague prompt into an LLM.

I was trying to find a movie title the other day, only remembered it had Lime in the title and had a Jack-the-Ripper setting. ChatGPT found it easily. Sure you have to fact check the results, but there’s undeniable value there.

I recently went through a large video editing project on Ubuntu. Really wanted to use DaVinci resolve but it had multiple hard crashes and just wouldn’t open for some reason, doesn’t seem like they support Linux as well as Mac and windows.

I ended up using Blender, and while it’s powerful and super useful to be able to link scenes from other files, one huge missing feature is support for videos of varying frame rates. If your videos don’t match, the audio will be either much longer or much shorter than the video clips.

Had a few hard crashes too and lots of bugs, but definitely usable.

Exploring a topic and then asking for specific book recommendations, getting it to argue both sides of an issue to see weak points, giving quizzes on topics. Also love using it to keep asking for practical examples of abstract ideas.

Unrelated modules often superficially look like each other at a point in time, I think that’s what the parent is referring to. An inexperienced developer will see this and think “I need to remove this duplication”. But then as the modules diverge from each other over time you end up with a giant complex interface that would be better off as 2 separate modules.

So deduplicating unnecessarily compresses the code without adding anything to code quality.

It’s a nice computer but calling it “repairable” is a farce, and System76’s customer support is unfortunately woefully inadequate.

I have one of these and spilled a drink on my keyboard, getting it replaced was $300 of parts and labor, but the worst thing was it took almost 2 months pressuring their support reps to actually complete the process and they would frequently just not respond to messages, or ignore information I provided or clarified.

Pop_OS! is really nice to be fair. I’ve also had issues with build quality. My Gazelle’s screen stopped working when the computer ran out of power and had a bent wire when I opened it up. Again they wanted hundreds of dollars to fix it, even though it was clearly a manufacturing defect. When they sent the computer back the chassis was cracked.
