Badass!!! Congrats. I love JJ’s mental model. Its so much less opionated and lets me do what I want. Want to make 5 versions of the same commit? Easy. Need to push out a change asap without having to pre create a branch, stash your changes, yadayada. Jj just adapts.

Once you start thinking in jj it becomes frustrating having think back to use GitHub as a code repo.

I would love to hear more about Costco's engineering culture. The fact they are still running/modernizing/supporting AS400 infrastructure and RPGLE applications is remarkable. I have to imagine that they have a unique devops model internally to keep that alive; especially facing a dwindling talent market.

I work in logistics and let me tell you what I think would attract high quality developers.

#1 good benefits. More than 2 weeks pto. A paid sick leave policy. Company paid health care. Paternity leave. Company match on 401k.

#2 Leadership that cares about good engineering over deadlines. Logistics is very fast paced. There is often a lot of pressure to deploy things yesterday. Development takes time, trial, and error. You need to be able to have patience for engineering.

If anybody asks you to work on IBM i or AS400 turn and run.

The system is cool. But the majority of jobs are underpaid in comparison to the open source stacks. And they wonder why there is a lack of new blood.

There are many articles out there claiming COBOL/Mainframe/AS400/“ancient” programmers are retiring and the orgs want to pay you big bucks to replace them. For the most part they are just parlor tricks to try and get a cost savings on new grads.
