Managed DB costs a lot.
Is there a simple safe setup that we can run on an Ubuntu server?
We self-host the Postgres db with frequent backups to s3 but just in case the site takes off, we need an affordable reliable solution.
Does anyone here run their own db servers? Any advise?
Backups, security, upgrades etc

> Equinix Metal got the closest, but bare metal on-demand still carried a 25-30% premium over our CapEx plan. Their global footprint is tempting; we may still use them for short-lived expansion.
> The Equinix Metal service will be sunset on June 30, 2026.
https://docs.equinix.com/metal/

TLDR: I built a "quick and dirty " private social network for my friends, posted on Reddit and HN,
got some interest so now have built it properly along with my brother.
site link: https://intimost.com/login/
demo creds:
test@example.com
Demo123!
Full version:
I needed a social network where I can just send updates and nothing
else. So I built it, my friends liked and now I have built it
"for the world".
Everything is private by default.
- Text-only updates
- No likes. Only views to acknowledge a post
- [in development] Comments are private between the poster and commenter
- Friends not followers
- Profiles are not searchable - You need the user's `Friend Code` to find a
profile
- Feed shows updates from your friends and nothing else
More context:
Original Reddit post (a few months ago): https://old.reddit.com/r/digitalminimalism/comments/1kuuv8h/...
Launch post (today): https://old.reddit.com/r/digitalminimalism/comments/1oh935z/...
I am looking for feedback and thoughts!
(You can use a dummy email to signup and delete the account a few clicks afterwards)
A lot of users are asking for photos, we are trying to figure out how to do
that in a "clean" way
Thank you

Thank you!
-Many say they want to stop doomscrolling and clout-chasing but I don't know how many are actually willing to do so
-Individuals may move here but their friends won't. So the feed will be initially empty by design. Introducing any kind of reward is against our ethos so we are clueless about how to convince existing friend circles to move.

Project might get dropped just before that. It has happened
Edit: I feel validated after reading the replies. I am not alone!

How should small social network sites, forums or any sites that post user-generatrd content etc who can't afford to do age verification respond to this law?
Block all requests from UK IPs?
We are building a niche social network and don't want to be in the cross-hairs.
Is anyone in a similar position? How's your company dealing with this?
Edit: apart from cost, storing user IDs etc goes against our goal of building a private social network.
