I worked in Olathe, Kansas for about eight years before moving to Portland, Oregon. I wouldn't personally move back, but I sure do miss the BBQ and significantly lower cost of living.
Assuming they would have kept their SF salaries - they would have felt like they got a pretty sweet raise. On the flip side, Kansas doesn't offer anywhere near the culture or available activities.
They way they choose to handle this was pretty cool though, good for them!

http://www.railstutorial.org/
This is a book teaches you how to build a Twitter like applications. According to the site it will eventually be accompanied by screencasts.
I do like screencast though. I say go for it but teach folks how to build a different application than the one in Rails Tutorial.

I think you should stick with the framework, at least until your requirements exceed the frameworks capabilities.
There is always a simpler solution that you can one off. But is it worth your time to reinvent the wheel?
Also, I'm curious - were you able to do the same thing in Python that you did in Scrapy because you tried Scrapy first?

I don't see the appeal of a tablet. I can't think of a single reason to use one. I like my iPhone - it fills in the gaps enough for me. But I still prefer to be on an actual computer.
Tablets just seem odd to me. How do you hold it? Do you set it down on the desk and stare down at it? Are you going to prop it up? Will it have peripheral support?
