Nothing has changed. The "flashy web" of the 2000s was ... Flash. Corporates paid premium rates to Flash Designers who couldn't write a line of HTML.

I used TB happily for years on Mac OS but its font rendering on Linux was one of the main reasons I never switched.

Making dynamically typed, single threaded languages faster via JIT usually comes at the cost of a significant increase in memory consumption which for businesses smaller than Shopify is a much more significant factor.
