I think it's just a vocal minority.
It's hard to say that "closed source" even has a community, so of course it's easy to point out assholes in the open source community.
I find (about half the time) submitting an issue on just about any github project run by "professionals" is a good way to be met with hostile behavior. It makes me wonder if the same things happen behind closed doors at places like google, Apple, MS, etc. I read a report a few months back about how the general atmosphere at google was one of pretentious content for fellow employees.
Maybe the tech community needs to get off its high-horse as a whole, including Lennart, who isn't 100% not-guilty of ever being "rude".
What tech related ecosystem has a "friendly" community?

It won't be tolerable until we weed out anyone who might say anything that anyone finds slightly offensive. No jokes allowed.
You think laws made to help people get up from the bottom tier should apply to everyone on the bottom tier and not just people of a certain color? Well you're racist.
Your favorite movie is blazing saddles? Well guess what: you're a racist.
/s
I think everyone should be able to use the same water fountain and no one should be able to cut in line solely based on the color of their skin, but on their level of thirstyness.
According to a lot of people on reddit (and HN) I'm a racist. I thought racism was discriminating against someone based on skin color.

Horrible idea.
If you tried to unify them you would have one bloated piece of crap or a desktop 90% of people hate.
I like having the choice between a few good DEs. What I don't understand is why Apple or Microsoft have yet to create a DE that is really better than something from the open source community. Sure each desktop is better at somethings than others, but it's hard to say that the ones that are being developed for proprietary OS's are objectively better than their open source counter-parts. You would think putting all your eggs in one basket would allow you to create a "super OS". Guess not.

Well I know I can't be the only person who had to look this up:
>Teetotalism refers to either the practice of, or the promotion of, complete personal abstinence from alcoholic beverages.
I mean, I kind of inferred, but this is my first time hearing the term.
Anyway, I only drink on special occasion or when I go out to a fancy restaurant. Other than that it's copious amounts of marijuana.

Except it's not open source. If it's not open source then you have no idea what's going on beyond what Apple tells you.
Ask your self:
Would Snowden use this phone? Your answer to this question is the same as the answer to the question "Is this phone secure?"
I guess I'll get downvoted for this sense it goes against the Apple circlejerk, but this issue is more important to me than magic internet points.

Isn't it likely that two years from now the price for a new phone will have dropped? So it could go from ~$100USD to maybe ~$70USD. Even if you upgraded something like an iPhone every 5 years it would cost more though. I could buy these for 10 years at $100 and still only pay $500, which is about what a high end phone costs that lasts half of that 10 year span (maybe).
Anyway, I think a lot of the complaints about not being able to update your OS stem from iPhones turning into bricks.

>At the last conference I attended, ~9/10 engineers were running macbooks
They're both tired tropes. There is a pretty reasonable mix of hardware and software run by 'engineers' and no where near 90% are macs.
edit: https://www.statwing.com/demos/dev-survey#workspaces/2496
That site has some pretty good statistics related to OS usage among programmers and some hardware usage, like iPod/iPhone, which I think is a decent indicator of whether or not these people own macs.

Don't know why you're getting down voted either. My old ipod touch is basically a brick. The battery doesn't last more than an hour, I can't update the OS anymore, 90% of apps aren't for my older version of iOS, and it lags on every input.
I wish I could just install whatever version of iOS it originally came with and use it as an mp3 player. Don't know why iTunes let me update to a version of iOS that my hardware can't handle, but oh well.
I honestly don't understand why apple fanboys get so worked up over this stuff, as if Apple is infallible. I just try to keep my opinions about apple to my self for the most part, at least on HN, because that's the environment the user base here has fostered.
Can't even read relevant tech news on HN if it shows Apple in a bad light, but hey, I can always go to reddit if I want to get a dose of reality relating to Apple.
