Your 401k will be forced to buy it for you, not to worry. You don't get a choice! And apparently no shareholder voting power either.

Technology-brain is confusing because it's usually pretty well-educated people who presumably read. There are so many examples of technological adoption that has made our lives worse. Cars and social media are easy and widely obvious examples.

Absolutely not happy it happened. It would have been way way better for everyone if we replaced horse carriages with subways, trams, walking and biking. The fact that we chose cars was an enormous mistake currently costing people health and happiness in large swaths of the country. Indeed, over 40k people literally die each year. Your change of dying in a car is 0.5% over your lifetime. Your chance of a serious injury is ~30%.

Possible, but only if there’s regulatory capture. Which will be difficult since any country could produce a SOTA model that everyone can use for free

The exit strategy is your 401k. SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic are banking on rule changes to indexes that will force retail to buy at elevated premiums. This will likely generate enough artificial demand for insiders to exit before prices correct. At least that’s OpenAI’s plan.
Fortunately for them, the current SEC is highly in favor of short-term market manipulation.

I doubt it. Compute costs tend to crater over time, and LLMs will almost certainly plateau. So the opposite is almost certainly the case: over time, it becomes cheaper to train.

There are myriad compute providers. I suspect the inference market is hard to monopolize. But given our anti-trust track record the past 40 years I suppose it’s possible.

Not really. I mean it’s not like they are particularly far ahead. Maybe a small lead on model performance, but nothing particularly significant. All the major players are within 6 months of each other. As soon as model improvements plateau there will be no observable difference between providers.
