The fact that there's an entire country mostly unaware of the utility and ubiquitousness of a simple electric kettle, blows my mind. But then again, I'm a product of the Empire (British) not a North-American.
But while the idea of using a stove top kettle (have done so in the past) is fine, the thought of using a microwave to heat up a cup of water for tea seems abhorent. (although it's really not)
I guess it came about because 110V not being as efficient? Or more American's are coffee drinkers?

Hiroshi Sakurazaka wrote 'All you need is kill', which became Edge of Tomorrow film.
And, while not SciFi, I think Haruki Murakami's books are worth a read and might scratch and itch you didn't realise you had. Start with Norwegian Wood if you want a light intro, but then Windup Bird Chronicle next. Possibly 1Q84 after that?

Had exactly the same thing in Australia when trying a 000 (Australia's emergency number) call with my Pixel 6 Pro after watching somebody run off the road and smash into a pole.
Fortunately I had the local police station number and was able to call that just fine, but not until a few failed attempts at the real emergency number.
That said, another good option is attempting to call 112. Which is an emergency number in many countries. (Works in the US too).
But yeah, it's not good.

In 1997, I had to convert a legacy unix (SCO System V?) application's comms from X.25 to tcp/ip. Had the source code, but it was a weird case of the system you built it on didn't have a networking stack (or was somehow massively different that it was a pain to build and now unsupported) and while I'd written some basic networking bits (some telnet utils etc) in C on windows, but felt like this was a bit of a stretch of my skills/abilities.
Anyway, after playing around with different flavours of linux, I ended up with a rather simple solution that ended up being easy to install. Essentially it was a two line script that piped the serial port to the destination server IP address, and inbound tcp/ip piped to the serial port.
So just plugging this little (old school) 486 box in-between the serial port on the legacy system and an RJ-45 connector which plugged into the 'corporate' network and we not only had an upgraded comms layer, but we now had remote system management, which we never had before.
Think it saved $250k+ minimum replacement at next to no cost. Just me barrelling up and down the country installing the new hardware. Was a fun project in the end and started me down the linux appreciation route.

Casino. All on Black. Repeat 3 more times (hoping your luck holds out for each).
16x in under an hour. (or zero most likely... but definitely lowest effort)
I don't recommend this approach however
But yeah, if you're talking USD, then one could easily live comfortably for five years in Vietnam/Thailand for $20k/year. (Although you could easily live in a ton of countries if you pick your town/city/area correctly)
Then smash out all those side-gig bootstrap ideas that come to mind. If you can build MRR of approx $6k, then you've effectively built up the equivalent of $1M earning 7% in the bank.
Actually, my latest company was started 3 years (and nearly a month) ago, and is now earning easily that in revenue from one of its Saas products, so yeah, it's definitely acheivable.

I had exactly this.
We run a Saas and someone wrote an email saying that our server was down, and when we'd expect it to be up. Not having had a notification, I double checked from a couple of geographic locations that our application was indeed up and responding.
After a bit of investigation, it turns out that they have to whitelist every unique address with their corporate IT. And had only whitelisted our primary client-app URL (talks to a couple of different API endpoints), hence the strange error message.
It's been a long time since I've worked somewhere with whitelisting.
