It's a little frustrating that Element X is constantly pitched as the answer when it isn't yet supported by Element's own EMS One hosted service.

Google can also decide at any time to put those web properties behind forced logins, or paywalls or just shutter them altogether. If Google doesn't want them to be part of the open web they won't be, regardless of whether this particular set of things is implemented or not. If we're all dependent on them enough that that's a problem for us, then that dependency is the problem.

I think this is a common framing because not everyone is aware that GPs are independent private businesses. We always refer to them as "part of the NHS" as if they were (or at least should be) equivalent to each other.

Surely that vision is exactly what (vanilla) Gnome is? On Desktop and on Mobile (with LibAdwaita). Incidentally they also seem to get a lot of criticism for having a strong vision.

It's the worst software I use on a day to day basis and it's not close. Granted that's on Linux which likely isn't Microsoft's main focus but still nothing else does this much this badly.

Do any cab companies here let you book online via browser/PWA rather than requiring a proprietary app to be downloaded? Uber used to have m.uber.com but it seems lately that doesn't actually allow you to book rides in this region anymore and I've not come across any others yet.

Element.io also offer paid managed servers where they do the bridging for you if you'd rather not deal with it yourself. Starts at around $10 a month for a home server plus some light WhatsApp bridging and works surprisingly well, with the caveats already mentioned above about calling.

Really depends how you define the task doesn't it? If it's "I have the ability to message other people" there's plenty of ways to accomplish that on this device. If you define the task as "I need to message other people specifically on a Google/Apple messenger application", well then it's always going to be out of Pine64s hands to some extent?

Starling do offer an API anyone can use to interact with their own account. Doesn't allow full functionality yet though.

Would you ever consider a licensing model similar to Cockroach DBs BSL where older versions fall into the public domain/are open sourced once they're no longer revenue generating? Or perhaps once a new major version is out?

If that is true (and I think it is) I would argue the law is wrong. It should absolutely be the case that senior executives have criminal liability for criminal behaviours that emerge under their stewardship whether or not they personally contributed to them. Either they knew about it in which case they're complicit or they didn't in which case they're negligent. The risk of criminal liability is also the only possible justification for the high current level of CEO pay relative to average salaries at most big name companies.

Yep, in Europe inter-bank transfers are also instant and if the underlying reason for all these regulations, confusions and trading impact is that US institutions have just been too cheap to upgrade the legacy infrastructure running the biggest store and exchange of value in the world then frankly surprise and anger seems justified.
