New comment by dc3k in "JPEG XL vs. AVIF for web use-cases"

Fair point. HDR images in Firefox just do not work at all, regardless of the format.

I really hope that some day Firefox supports HDR AVIF images

New comment by dc3k in "Mother convicted of: her 5 yo walks short way to pond alone in Virginia"

dc3k — Mon, 07 Sep 2026 04:20:44 +0000

in addition to the absolute lunacy of the charges in the main article, the list of similar cases where parents were charged/convicted for letting their children walk a short distance alone is absurd

america really is a backwards place

New comment by dc3k in "HackerRank open sourced its ATS. My resume scored 90/100. Oh wait 74. No – 88"

dc3k — Mon, 29 Jun 2026 05:01:09 +0000

Disregarding the fact that this thing is completely broken, its grading rubric is ridiculous to begin with (as was mentioned in the article itself, but I must reiterate how completely stupid this is):

> 35 points for open source contributions

> 30 for personal projects

I don't contribute to open source or have personal projects because I don't spend my free time doing what I do 40 hours a week to make a living. My 15 years of work experience is worth a maximum of 25%, so any company using this idiotic system would pass on me immediately. Open source and personal projects are fine, but in no sane world are they worth 65% of a resume's score.

it should not be legal for the product page to say “purchase” or “buy” when in reality you’re only renting it with a to be determined end date

dc3k — Sun, 16 Feb 2025 00:13:17 +0000

im running a pihole so i take advantage of lighttpd that it uses, with the mod_proxy configuration. i can then do something like the following to have a friendly url on my local network

$HTTP["host"] == "jellyfin.dc" { proxy.server = ( "" => ( ( "host" => "192.168.1.99", "port" => "8096" ) ) ) }

New comment by dc3k in "Google Maps now shows the 'Gulf of America'"

dc3k — Tue, 11 Feb 2025 01:17:49 +0000

> Gulf of America is a more inclusive name anyway since both USA and Mexico are part of North America

gulf of america is not more inclusive. the "renaming" was not meant to be inclusive, it was very clearly meant to be divisive.

this is a similar argument to one often used when people call canadians americans: "umm, ackshully, canada is in north america, so it's correct to call them americans"

and of course the flaw in that argument is that literally nobody on earth considers canadians to be americans except people on the internet trying to sound smart.

i’ve been doing the same for a few years now. wireguard’s “on demand” feature is perfect for this. the odd time i’ll have to shut it off to get through a captive wifi portal, but otherwise it (along with browser ad blockers) has made mobile browsing significantly less terrible

New comment by dc3k in "Man dies after being knocked down by woman on scooter"

dc3k — Mon, 23 Sep 2024 03:50:12 +0000

we have these scooters in my (very touristy) town. they make an annoying “bing bong avoid sidewalks” sound when driven on the sidewalk, but that’s it. they don’t limit the speed to something annoying/reasonable like 3-4kph. tourists constantly blasting by people on the sidewalk, it’s not surprising to me that this sort of thing happens.
