I don’t disagree really and it is mostly what I am doing. I put probably like 20% of my work through open weights.
It does make me sharper I think. If you only ever use claude or whatever you don’t even really know exactly how tied to it you are.
Funny enough the drug dealer thing still holds. A deal’s a deal if you’re going to buy it anyway.

I'm not the person you asked but yes pretty much. I've found the prompt injection protection models pretty limited, but get good results from gpt-oss-safeguard with a policy describing various prompt injection techniques. More expensive but more flexible and reliable and I only run it on web fetch and web search results. Costs me like 5-20 cents a day depending on what I'm working on.

The current crop of flash models are more comparable to sonnet than opus but they are very affordable.
The reality is that the subscriptions are heavily subsidized. Pretty much every sub that's not run by one of the money-burning frontier labs has had to drop it or dramatically increase prices and lower limits in the last few months. Cheap tokens are an acquisition tool, not a real product. It sounds dramatic but it really is the drug dealer sales funnel.
At some point they're going to drop the real prices in your lab and you're going to have to figure out how to pay that much or pay someone else a lot less. Better to get a handle on it now.

Anthropic specifically is clearly trying to get the US government to ban open weight models for anticompetitive reasons. So making LLMs seem (or be!) dangerous aligns with their interests very well.

Before everyone gets into the obvious snobbery and taunts. I was a professional cook for many years and a pretty advanced fermenter myself.
If you don't respect tobasco you don't understand hot sauce. You don't have to like it, I find very little use for it and don't generally keep it around.
But their mastery of a complex and unpredictable natural process, and ability to consistently produce exactly the product they intend to, at this scale, decade after decade, is a nearly incomprehensible feat of food production.
And for some foods you exactly do want "spicy vinegar" which is pretty much their flavor profile. You gotta respect it to respect yourself.

It's a descriptive label of the general lineage the designer considers their font to be in, not an ISO spec.
A little bit of looseness here is a pretty strong signal for careful font design actually. It means the creator considered some other factor (in this case char disambiguation) to be more important than rigid adherence to the category.

DCSS is a venerable open source roguelike. Seeded games are an opt-in variant and there's a small community around sharing "interesting" seeds or ones particularly suited to certain builds or playstyles.
This runs dcss's dungeon gen and dumps seed data via a patched lua script. It's not meant to be a full enumeration of seeds, nor a complete dump of any particular seed. Just a way to find some interesting ones. I have about 1.3m for the most recent major version and you can add any valid seed to the corpus.
And seeds are strictly PER VERSION so if you want to play one on webtiles make sure's it's serving one of the versions I have seeds for and not trunk.
It grew out of a tool I'd been dragging around for years and finally decided to put a web interface over.
OCaml, sqlite, htmx alright alright.
https://crawl.develz.org

Yes, it is clearly designed to give you access to all of this intentionally. Its system prompt (which you can just read in the interface without asking) explicitly instructs it to act on behalf of the user, not meta. All of its memory files, skills, db schema, memory integration system etc are likewise visible because they went out of their way to add an interface for viewing them!
I don't like or trust meta any more than I always did but I don't see how they could have done a "better" job with this. These kinds of agents are inherently pretty risky IMO but I don't see how this one is particularly more than any others.
Playing around with it I really don't get the sense there's any hidden prompt contradicting what's visible. It's nearly gleeful at using the VM in ways that were not intended and likely against meta's interests. I feel like someone must have won a really interesting internal power struggle to get this thing out in this form.

Not in the same way I don't think.
My understanding is that the US's longstanding evaluation is that their strategic goals in the region can't be accomplished by brawling with Iran over the strait, and their best move is to avoid it. The actions of every previous administration align with this view.
Where Iran's strategic position can be improved by drawing the US into an open conflict. Disrupting global petroleum markets, forcing the US to spend disproportionate resources defending its regional allies or withdraw and admit it can't, weakening the US's influence as a diplomatic power, all are achievable (or, frankly, achieved) with this conflict.
The US has no comparable strategic wins to even aim for here. At this point their only reasonable goal is restoring open trade through the strait, the status quo before the conflict. Fighting a war to successfully reclaim the status quo that was disrupted by entering the war is, strategically, losing a war.

The real number we want evaluate is "what percent of the revenue comes from people experiencing significant negative consequences from the product."
For alcohol that number is something like 2/3 revenue from the top 10% of drinkers, who drink an order of magnitude more than the decile below them. I doubt gambling is very different but if you have more info I'm happy to hear it.

It's a real problem but your framing of it is itself very alarming.
Most humans aren't useless by any measure of most or usefulness. Our culture is our tools, dying due to a lack of antibiotics doesn't mean you didn't have anything to contribute, it means you didn't have access to the tool you needed. This is the problem we need to guard against.
No one is going to lose the ability to reason! This is accepting the most extreme version of the marketing presented by frontier labs, don't do it. People may lose fluency or familiarity or access to training on specific skills. We should put some care into making sure that can't be a catastrophe, for sure.

I mean just from what's known of the funding and timeline it pretty much has to be based on open weights.
But it is likely more than just a fine tune + novel training. At the very least the LM head is swapped out for a classifier one and then or also idk, bidirectional attention for the encoding pass I'm out of my depth at this point and will stop guessing. The training is probably where they have the biggest moat though, not that it's necessarily huge.
I have a project that fits jev as advertised almost comically well and I've been playing with it, and the various hacks and open versions. Jev doesn't necessarily perform better overall but it is quite different. It's sensitive to prompt phrasing in ways the others aren't, it's easy to generate questions where all the other models cluster in confidence but jev is an outlier. Not necessarily more correct, but it does feel like it's getting its answers in a different way.
I'm guessing just as much as anyone else but I've been spending a ton of time on this the last couple weeks, it landed right when I was most ready to dig into it.

You can write a config that points your claude code at any anthropic-compatible endpoint, and replace opus and sonnet with whatever you want. Things like deepseek and glm in there do not feel at all like they do in more minimal harnesses, but neither do they convincingly act like claude models. It's very stark and frankly they run like shit this way. Try it.

A lot of the problem here is that the overall typography on this site is not particularly great.
