Yes it's basically very little but very valuable attention with a clear current intent of buying.
Let's say a search term like "apartment for sale in Dallas", I think 15 years ago one of the highest grossing search keywords was something like "asbestos cancer lawyer".
And Meta has incredible amounts of behavioral data but is usually not that close to the thing I want to do right in this moment, they closed that gap.
Open AI has a very good psychological profile, very little current intent and very little attention, but this might change.

There are only two successful ad business forms in the digital world, attention or intent. Meta is built on attention and Google and others like amazon are built on intent.
Everything else is optimizing the targetting data in some kind of behavioral way to get better intent data or to reach the right users.
I have no idea where something like Chatgpt stands on that axis, it has actually very little attention (in hours per day) for most people and I am not sure that it has enough intent signals.

I get that question a lot and I can understand it, so there are two things here at work, one is freedom of speech. Depending on your local rules (I am from Germany so our rules i.e. concerning the Nazi past are different than the US rules) freedom of speech should be guaranteed, and opinions shouldn't be labeled as desinformation or manipulation based on their content.
What we are monitoring are deceptive patterns on a text or transcript level. Deceptive patterns can be things like information inconsistency in one post, context shifts in one post that are used to reframe something, or video patterns like fake statistics or fake headlines that are not consistent with the main content.
All of these patterns are actual science backed psychological manipulation patterns and they are consistently used in the most viral posts we detect. My perspective after one year working on this is that the average media literacy is even lower than we think and that we build an evolutionary system with the social media platforms that is optimized to increase the performance of digital manipulation actors.

I have been working on a monitoring and prebunking system for digital manipulation and desinformation. We are focusing not on the content or narrative but on the psychological patterns and manipulation techniques that are used.
It's the most disturbing thing I have ever worked on, there is much more out there than moste people realize and a lot of it uses deceptive dark patterns.
If somebody is interested in talking more about this or is working on similar things, always welcome!

Yes we need to restrict the freedom of non citizens to influence our debates. And we need to have rules how digital platforms can influence our internal debates, we had this rules for TV and newspapers. That's not suppression thats's defense.

Let's be a bit more honest here, I think the Italian law is badly defined, but I also think the american perspective is wrong.
We (all tech people everywhere me included) argued for a lot of time for free speech on the internet, but the result currently is that we built a system that is free speech for Russian and Chinese bots and actors. In Europe we are under daily attack from Russian accounts that spread massive amounts of desinformation, deep fakes, just emotional appeals with the goal of destroying liberal democracy. The US government is actively trying to support them by fighting against any kind of European rules and spreading their part of desinformation.
This is not about normal politics, Europe is under siege.

There are only a few factors driving this and they are very hard for Europe to solve:
- the Bay Area an industrial cluster not comparable to anything we had before due to the scalability and the capital requirements of the products
- the US market, the most powerful consumer market in history allowing massive economies of scale at companies, companies can work with a much higher productivity level
- capital markets that can finance the most outlandish ideas
- better demographics
- less crisis and russian intervention (Brexit, Syrian war, Ukraine war are all part of Russias attacks)
- bureacracy and regulations are totally overvalued as a factor, definitely something we should solve, but the EU would not be a tech leader without GDPR

It really makes no sense to look at per capita figures this way. I am driving an electric car in Germany now and I built a new home with better insulation and I have LED lights. My per capita figures went way down, I am also taking my cargo bike in the city everywhere, so my per capita figures went down again.
There's a very relevant question about the viability of energy intensive industries in Germany, but even that is dependent on energy source. A lot of industries are switching to electric heating that will also lead to lower per capita energy use.
https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/energy-intensity?tab=char...

I didn't argue for or against regulation, my point is that the US regulations structure with specific states defining technological regulation is even more insane than EU regulations on technology.
Because common market regulations are clearly defined as EU responsibility.
