We have a WhatsApp group where we share music recommendations with each other. It's grown quite a bit now and it's gotten hard to keep up. Also new members missed everything that came before. So I set out to solve this problem and have some fun last week.
I decided to write a shell script that does the following:
- Parses chat export file and extracts all the Spotify URLs.
- Removes duplicates
- Authenticates w/ Spotify API
- Fetches Ids of tracks already in playlist
- Creates a difference list of missing tracks
- Adds those to the playlist
And that's that.

> "Highly funded companies are expected to produce revenue growth."
Yup, this is exactly what I was hoping wasn't true: That it's impossible to be both well funded, high revenue growth AND do so while tackling a meaningful problem.
---
Don't want to make this thread about all the ways in which Tesla is a bad example (just first one that came to mind).

Fair. But I do think "better = good". It fits my main query of 1. Well funded 2. Trying to solve meaningful problems

Are there any well funded tech startups / companies tackling major societal problems?
Any of these fair game: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_global_issues
----
I don't see or hear of any and want to know if this is just my bias or if there really is a shortage of resources in tech being allocated to solving the worlds most important problems. I'm sure I'm not the only engineer that's looking out for companies like this.
Ran into this previous Ask HN (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24168902) that asked a similar question. However, here I wanna focus on the better funded efforts (not side projects, philanthropy etc).
One example I've heard so far is Tesla. Any others?

Thanks for sharing this perspective! I know exactly what you're talking about. I wrote this piece and have to admit that even for me I have days when I struggle to bring this attitude to a problem or a day. I guess it's one of those hard habits to break.
What helps for me the most is intentionality. To literally set my intention for a day or for a problem right before I jump in. So if I know I'm about to jump into a tricky problem I literally take a few seconds to remind myself of the attitude I want to bring and even exactly what I want to focus on.
So this would be things like "Don't try to judge difficulty (easy/hard), just go wherever it takes me" or "Don't be afraid of the amount of work". One that super helpful for me is deliberately separating to "understanding" part of a problem from the "solving" - so i'd tell myself "I'm just trying to understand what's going on right now - solve later". Etc etc.
Hope this helps.
