I believe it's not a "problem." It's expression, like a painting. Every work of audio reactive LEDs is a reflection of the designer's intent, constraints, biases, imagination, and the context in which it was designed. Like painting, there are technical chops, the craft, like the first half of the article, the lag, the mapping of frequency and amplitude, etc. But once those are mastered the road becomes wide open. That's the "what makes someone tap their foot?" the article asks.

That sounds a bit gobbeldygook to me. Its either oversinplification or bs. Install a crystal oscillator?
My favorite recent oddity:
I was driven to the store, so I drove to the store. The store drove me there.
My passenger was driven to the store so he asked me to drive him to the store. So since the store was driving us to the store, I drove us to the store. We've become good friends since he was driven to the store. I'm glad the store drove us to the store.
Even though I usually prefer to drive cattle.

Ive done a lot of analysis on the Trump as Putin agent topic. I found he nearly as often acts agents Russia as with. What's more likely is he treats Putin as an inspiration, wrt to converting the country to an oligarchy and offshoring national funds for himself.

It's a communications skill, like, say, making powerpoint slides. If you get good at it, you will swear by it. But if can't gain skill, it's easy to think it's bogus. If you're deeply interested I can go into detail as to what it's about and not about. Or you can buy some books, get a trainer, or take a class.
Tl; dr: it's about adding a second layer to your communication which attends to the subconscious, not unlike art. It was originally for therapy, but unfortunately a lot of businessdorks in the 90s got into it and perverted it.
