0. Save your money for laundry and storage.
1. Food pantries will provide food. “I have a food emergency.”
2. Call the local homeless shelters, mental health clinics - anywhere that deals with indigent populations.
3. Recognize your bravery for putting ethics over money.
4. Work your way into a low-income housing situation. Many ethical thinkers live this way.
5. Don’t get paranoid or angry. You have dignity.
6. Join a church which is full of intelligent and relaxed people. I recommend Catholicism.
7. If you have to ask for something, ask for it with a smile. People want to help each other.
8. Family sticks together.
Sincerely,
A programmer who lived homelessly for years

I think the main character is a Savant, who others view as an idiot. The title and its characterization are ironic. He is the smartest character in the book, but viewed as an idiot, due to a consistently ignorant society.
Not unlike, for example, Sufi poets who claim to be gods and then are humiliated and executed for heresy. His label of “idiot” is his execution. A crowd crying to crucify Christ.

Heartless and out of touch with the needs of the general public. Guess that happens when you forget what it means to struggle to pay both rent and health insurance.
When you see a poor person struggling, remember that your public arguments contributed to their plight. If that even resonates with you.

Are we ever really content? Even if we were to increase our own happiness, we would still live in a world where, outside our walls, the suffering persists. Could we really, perfectly be happy, knowing?
If the answer is no, then to be happy, we must pass through hell with the rest of them.
