What the article describes is gopherspace, which believe it or not still exists. And believe it or not, is experiencing a resurgence. It's too bad major browsers gave up on gopher:// because as we are seeing now in this and other laments for the old www, we lost something that we didnt have to lose. Gopherspace--check it out.

Exactly right. Corporations already use a complex web of eula and tos that effectively opt you out of the legal system and into the court of their favorite arbiter.

If there's some guy out there with your name, who also lives in your state and also uses facebook, and he happens to be a klansman, by the time you realize that you have a Kafkaesque situation to sort out with your 'social capital,' the damage may already be tremendous. We already see this at the U.S. border with agents checking your social feeds, and in legions of stories about stolen identities... god help us.

Who knows. If you are concerned you could always "disavow" thru Google. Or just go to Fiverr and for $5 spam your competitors with bad links to level the playing field. It's all such a freaking joke these days

This is old news. This is old blackhat from 2005. Get with the new evil programs, writer. I'm up against what I can only describe as "company spam." Software company creates multiple llc's to market the same software product with slightly different names or names similar to legit companies. It works like a charm to clog up Google results. And if one gets dinged by Google, just crank up another company with a "headquarters" in Nevada.

At least the kind Indian person on the telephone assures me otherwise. It's too bad that Google doesn't share the sentiment of their Indian employees who are at least feigning helpfulness.

Adwords banned my site for a page that was not being advertised in Adwords.

It appears what you need to do today to be safe is have a landing page on a completely unique site, without hyperlinks going anywhere else. Or maybe, send people to Google Shopping. That's probably what this is all about.
