Totally unrelated pet peeve of mine, I hate when people write this: "MTBF vs MTTR (mean-time-between-failure vs. mean-time-to-recovery)".

You first use the full words and then introduce the acronym that you're going to use in the rest of the text: "Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) vs. Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR)".

With the latter, readers understand the term immediately, even if they don’t know the acronym. And they don't have to read these weird letters before getting the explanation.

I have to say, I took a one year break from HN and only came back a few weeks ago, and I'm astonished to see how "garbagey" it is now. We're not yet at Reddit level but it does feel very different from a year ago.

Done this a long time ago. It wasn't prices that drove me away from Netflix and Co. It was how old contents started to be "updated" for "modern audiences/values", and how movies/shows kept being moved around between platforms.

Got my Bluray player, I buy a movie once in a while when I consider it a "classic" that I really want to have, otherwise local library has a lot of options. And worst case scenario, the high seas.

Same principles with music and games. I still get/burn CDs.

The difference is the "de facto" advantages - provided by nature for example - and "de jure" advantages - when the law is not the same for everyone.

I happen to believe it is pointless to "fight" the former, while governments/societies who put in place the latter are just hypocrites.

But hey, don't let facts and logic stop you in your crusade :)

I used to work for a sports betting company. These people definitely exist. They are few though because they are the ones who understand that the sport/game/match/whatever is irrelevant. They bet the "odd line". They bet on the platform that screwed up and didn't adjust their line quickly enough to follow the market. They don't know baseball, or football, or tennis. They just know the numbers.

They barely did anything. They could have done something great. They could have ended the program all together, they could have put a serious cap on it, they could have made the $100k fee a yearly fee, etc

But no, they did virtually nothing. I would even be surprised if more than 100 companies paid the one time $100k fee at this point with all the loopholes that were included.

My question was rhetorical. Renewals shouldn't be treated differently from new applications in spirit.

The H1B worker is meant to temporarily fill a gap. If there is available US talent, the H1B worker should leave and be replaced by a citizen/permanent resident.

I don't think "American workers" are the target demographic of the Democratic Party though.

And yes, the next round will be "worse than Trump". The reality is Trump ran on certain principles that his voters adhered to, and he didn't deliver. The next logical step will be to support somebody even more "extreme".
