In 2016 I joined C project initially created in 1999. This project had ~7k lines in gitignore and I learned this only because one of my commit created 2h of email exchange why my code does not compile. Turns out filename was forbidden by one rule.

This one file was more sophisticated than any other file in the project.

It contained "good practices", editors/IDE files of applications dead for more than 10y, personal. /tmp directories in various names, files versioning using suffixes and comments for sections v of rules starting about in half of the file.

This project learned my to keep your own shit in local global gitignore not in project.

You are the very first person I encountered who claim LLM can fix technical debt. Usually I seem comments and articles saying LLM can only produce it. And I can agree with those articles and comments

As a European I can only say I would rather pay 9€ monthly to European company than even receiving 5€ from USA

I self-host my application so I don't have need for such service but if I couldn't I would pay 9€

Learn, adapt and is capable of admitting mistakes & fixing it without addition input. Something AI is not capable.

Even today Claude was not able to dig deep and try other ways to do what it suppose to do for me. It was constantly "I gave up"

Really? From what I see everyone are raising prices and even if tokens price is dropping price of running LLM is raising. LLM is highly subsidized and will never be cheaper than human

Are you aware AI companies are subsidizing usage and have negative revenue?

And now your comparison is inaccurate. I said whole application. So the correct one would be selling/renting construction vehicles vs building entire building and here selling/renting is maybe 10% of developer income.

Digging a hole is like making small code change and if you wish to continue using this analogy then tokens are digging a hole and selling entire applications (thing Software house do) is construction company building entire building

Second obviously deliver more cash and here AI premise starts to crack. AI can't deliver anything good, costs much more than developing team (Uber proved it) and even if you use it as hard as possible and it does what it suppose to deliver max 5% increase across the board

Yes, I don't think this will be a lot better. Newest Claude is barely better, same with the rest of the model. In the same time cost of training new models and running them is increasing so taking this in the account I don't think this'll even last 5y

I'm 40yo. Do you know how long I'm waiting? Only taking for an account this newest hype I heard like 4x next year and the current progress is slowing significantly over last year. Even foundings are starting to back off

Only in a world were AI companies can subsidize AI usage indefinitely. In reality AI is not cheap and larger & more potent model it's usage costs is more expensive

I had the same exact issue. Turns out I have depression. Currently I'm on meds, therapy and functioning on 80% my ability but it's still better than near 0

I used AI, namely Claude Opus 4.8, to create native client for Mattermost using Slint with Rust bindings. To create such application you don't need AI, it's GUI and cross-platform and for exercise purposes it was perfect.

I manage to create functionally correct application but it fall very short in performance and required constant logic validation. GUI components also required constant oversight and manual fixing since AI was simply unable to fix it and gone in circles doing exactly the same thing 2 steps back. Sometimes it even broke perfectly correct component for no apparent reason

Lastly it tends to load data from server in very suboptimal way, ex. for each comment it loaded user profile often repeating request.

After a week I had GUI app which lacks in UI and no-one would use.

The same application to develop manually would take considerable longer but application would be useable and fixing above issues most likely would take longer due to accumulated tech debt

In which world throwing business logic to "optimize memory usage" isn't crappy solution? Or making 1T from 4G? It didn't returned decent solution, contrary it was worst than terrible

There's other word for such code and it sounds similar. It's crappy. I was tempted to use Claude couple of days ago to help me with optimization and from 4Gb RAM and 21s it managed to squeeze 1Tb and 41s. When I asked to fixed it AI reduced it to 1Gb and 10s. It just removed most heavy business logic. So yeah. 3 days and this was only total waste of time and cash

Cheap excuses. It's like saying Europe started without asphalt streets so we don't have it. Building/upgrading asphalt street is order of magnitude more costly than cable yet majority of streets aren't dirt and stones

The issue lies in willingness to upgrade and cutting costs on end users

I'm using custom split keyboard with whatever I program to Blank key and still it never crossed my mind to put any Polish character as single key.

In Poland we informally use combinations and maybe some Poles use letter per key but I my entire live I never met a single person to do so
