It's a pipeline for generating dense crossword puzzles with a Rust grid fill engine and optional Claude based clue writing and QA processes.

I use it to generate the crossword puzzles on https://wordfuzz.com/. The quality is already good for smaller (5x5 and 9x9) puzzles. I'm working on improvements for larger 15x15 NYT style puzzles.

I'm also working on Ekorbia: https://github.com/ekorbia/ekorbia-desktop. It's a lightweight, MIT licensed, Rust/Tauri desktop app for private local LLMs with a prompt library, chat overlay, ephemeral chat, model comparisons, and folder/RSS/URL watches.

The builds are unsigned but you can build it yourself to avoid the warnings. It has a bundled engine on macOS and requires an OpenAI-compatible server on Windows/Linux. Any feedback would be appreciated.

The pipeline uses a Rust fill-engine to generate dense, newspaper style crossword puzzles and optionally an LLM based clue-writer to write clues and QA review the puzzles.

Accounts are optional and only sync progress across devices. Signed-out progress is stored in localStorage.

The pipeline consists of a Rust grid fill-engine and a Claude based clue-writer. The fill-engine generates candidate grid skeletons (default is 200) and fills them with words from the Crossword Nexus Collaborative Word List. The clue-writer uses Claude to generate multi-tiered clues (easy, medium, hard), explanations, and QA review the generated puzzles. The clue-writer explanation and/or QA steps can be skipped or the clue-writer can be skipped entirely if you want to write your own clues.

I’ve also created a crossword puzzle web app that can be used to test puzzles generated by the pipeline (https://wordfuzz.com/). The puzzles in the archive have all been generated with the pipeline. QA reviews did show issues with some of these puzzles but they should be solvable and I’ve left them as is so the quality of the pipeline can be accurately judged. You can run the pipeline yourself and use the test page ( https://wordfuzz.com/test) to test the puzzles you generate. The test page uses LocalStorage so nothing is uploaded to the server.

Note: The clue-writer requires an Anthropic API key and costs me an average of around $0.50 to fill a 15x15 grid with multiple-tiered clues and explanations. If you’d like to give the pipeline a try, run a single puzzle first and verify the cost is acceptable to you before generating multiple puzzles.

What are you storing in Supabase? I've also AI coded a couple of small word games but I explicitly stayed away from any back-end requirements so I could deploy easily to CloudFlare pages.

Is the latency truly comparable to desktop plugins like ToneX or the Neural DSP plugins? I think many guitarists are very latency sensitive.

For now I will just use Phil to build mini puzzles and try using an LLM to help generate clues. Thanks.

I provided a few specific clues and answers along with the grid layout, and a theme as context. Ideally this would generate a filled crossword that I could then verify and edit.

Claude would churn, restarting from scratch over and over trying to fill the layout. If I remove the grid layout from the context, I can generate sparse sequences like you mention but these are not very fun to play.

I'm big fan of crossword puzzles such as the New York Times daily crossword and I'd like to build my own crossword puzzle game.

Has anyone had any luck using AI or other tools to speed up the process of building crossword puzzles?

I've used the Phil crossword puzzle maker to export crossword patterns with a few clues and answers in JSON format. Then I've tried various prompts with Claude Sonnet 4 to fill out the rest of the puzzle but I haven't been able to produce a valid crossword puzzle with the across and down words intersecting properly.

Any advice on tools or prompting would be appreciated. Thanks!
