> mysterious aliens that pluck you out of hyperspace
This mechanic was so interesting - it would happen to me, I'd manage to survive the assualt, and then be so far away from anywhere to refuel, and without enough fuel to jump again, that I'd be dead-in-the-water every time. It was so weird to win the battle and then.. not. But I couldn't help but always get excited when it would happen! Did anyone ever survive this?

Why not move and call it quits? That might actually enable you to forgive them (from afar). Calling it quits was the first step in my forgiveness towards my parents. You could send them occasional updates but you shouldn't feel like you're obligated to otherwise engage (at least for a period of like 6 months - and then reevaluate).

I'm a web developer, and excited about progressive web apps. But until we have access to sensors and video streaming that isn't subpar, and sweet/easy camera APIs - this idea is good but simply not great- and that's a big difference when it comes to making an amazing UX on your crappy little phone.
At least today:
* service workers only on chrome
* the install prompt is totally not a native browser feature
* mobile web browsers are straight up slower at rendering

But it's not just about writing individual components when you build an app (you need something like a router still for instance). I say this as someone who rather likes the model Web Components espouses. Developer ecosystems matter a lot - for development, debugging and hiring. At present you have a great many more resources/communities to reach out if you go with React. When you get stuck with Web Components or polymer, and you will get stuck, you are a lot more on your own.
Also, for building you are, at least presently afaik, limited to vulcanize instead of the richer set of tools out there for more typical patterns. Vulcanize is cool, but again - if you get stuck, and you will if you do something complex - you have to rely on a much smaller community to help you out.
