Hey all! I'm Nick, co-founder at FieldDay. We are launching our app publicly today and I'm excited to show it to the HN community.
With the new wave of AR/camera devices and latest AI breakthroughs, we think now is the time to build a camera-first app platform.
We are starting by shipping a tool that allows you to train custom models from your phone. You can collect and manage data from your phone, train a model, and finally test the model and analyse your model. This quick iteration cycle lets you quickly refine your models to make them robust. Once you're happy you can export in various formats and we are also working on hooking it up to various actions.
We see ourselves as a spiritual successor to tools like Lobe.ai and Teachable Machine but we believe letting people collect, train and test from their phones will open up a lot of use cases that are hard to capture on your desktop computer or by looking for datasets online. And of course, we are excited to offer much more than classifiers in the future.
Let me know if you have a cool use-case or what we could do to make this useful for you. Also feel free to hit me up at nick@field.day if you encounter any bugs or have a question.
Thanks!

I was about to http://www.indev.ca/MailTags.html. A really awesome (it seems to me for now) plugin for Apple Mail that enables tags. But before that I wondered if I haven't missed anything and will regret spending the money. I'd love to use something that I know will be there in 10-20 years rather than pretty and trendy software products like Sparrow... as they all have the same fate - either aqcuired or abandoned.
I saw this the other day in the app store - http://www.handle.com/
Looks great! But I doubt it will exist in 2 years.
Mailbox seems good but it's owned by Dropbox and that makes me slightly uncomfortable.
But I still want something that looks good... and I also love tags/labels which are supported unfortunately only by Gmail and MailTags for Apple Mail.
So I don't know if I can switch to something like Mutt.
So what does HN use?

I'm looking for an internship for the next summer. I know how to use Google (or DDG in my case) but I thought asking here wouldn't hurt since I'm sure lots of HN users have experience with past internships in London. Any info at all is highly appreciated!
I was hoping Mozilla had an open place in Europe (ideally London) but it doesn't seem to be the case.
So, where should I apply?
Thanks in advance.

I think the idea of Hydra was the rewrite it in Lua but I can't speak for him. Will definitely try it out asap!

As a heavy Ableton user and coder I would like to have a coding environment that also has powerful gui libraries so I can quickly implement faders and knobs and stuff when needed but also be able to change code on the fly. Kind of get the best of both worlds for the ultimate hacking music environment.
This is something similar and very interesting but for visual stuff based on openFrameworks:

As someone who's looking for an internship, could you briefly go over the skills you are looking for in an intern. I have a hard time judging myself and don't know exactly how much an intern should be capable of for a YC company or really any company with similar status/success. Obviously, it depends from company to company but still would be interesting to hear your thoughts.
Thanks

I have no particular background in programming languages design and theory but It's been an exciting topic the last few years since a lot of new languages have gained popularity and also most of the big companies seem to have one or two of them in their portfolio (no need to list them all really C#, Go, Swift etc).
I've been also on an exploration lately into the history of computer science and reading about the Lisp family and Smalltalk as they seem to viewed as the better designed ones. There is also that quote from PG where he says langs that are invented for the use of the author tend to be better.
So what I don't understand and hope somebody here could shed some light on it is what's with all the new languages? How many of them really bring something new to the table, a better way than the old one? How is Go or Rust better than C C++ Ruby Python Lisps Java Smalltalk Erlang and whatnot. Are those languages designed for very specific cases where older languages can't cope with. When I read about Smalltalk or Lisp or Haskell people regard them as the pinnacle of programming language design and yet their popularity isn't really proportional to those statements.
How do languages get popular? Money, syntax, portability? Why did PHP rule the 90' and not Common Lisp or Erlang or whatever. Why do I read so much bad stuff about C++ from smart people yet it's one of the most popular languages. Why isn't Objective-C more popular since it is too C with classes? Why Java and not Self?
When I ask those questions I am in no way trying to discredit new languages and their usefulness, I am just young, naive, not very smart and trying to get and idea of how the real world of programming and computer works.
And yes, I know the story of JavaScript. Surely that's an exception in the rule of how languages get popular?
