Ask HN: How do you model temporarily invalid data structures

Say you’re making a chess game. A valid board only has one piece per square, or zero. But, you have an algo that generates boards by moving pieces around and during that algo you may move a piece on top of another and then later decide to move one of them to get back to valid.

Do you try to use some existing Board type and just avoid in your algo those invalid states (like by using a stack or some data structure to avoid iteratively moving pieces one at a time).

Do you have a separate InvalidBoard type that allows multiple pieces per square?

I think it’s context dependent but I’m curious how you’ve seen this handled in different ways.

Ask HN: iPhone 17 buggy for anyone else?

From slow responses to taps,janky UI artifacts, weird animations that dont quite match up. Tapping on a photo in messages has an obvious half second delay before it opens.

I upgraded from an old XS and this doesnt feel any snappier.

Possibly its just bugs in the new OS that need to be ironed out?

Did it have near 100% coverage or did it make tradeoffs on what to test?

Did it include UI tests which are notoriously difficult, and if so how did it handle issues like timeouts and the async nature of UI?

Did it have rigid separation of concepts between unit vs integration tests etc, or more fluid?

Could you refactor internal code without changing tests — the holy grail.

In a good work environment you’ll have some telepathy with your product people and you wont have to communicate every minor change, which wastes time. Its similar to implementing a UI design — you and the designer will develop a relationship where you dont need to communicate every pixel, you fill in the blanks and show results, repeat.

I was thinking one server and just for job seekers. Like a support group for people looking for tech jobs.

Maybe there could be channels per role/level, like #backend-senior, #ml-junior. So you could discuss hiring process and get tips from people looking for similar roles.
