The real flex is delivering it in one-tenth of the time. Mentioning lines of code is mostly noise.
I’ve worked with 20-year-old codebases and products that grew organically over decades and still sit well below a million lines of code. Using LOC as some kind of health or success metric makes me more suspicious than impressed.

We had a notorious (traditional) ML course at uni, with a very high fail rate. I got an assignment full with “complete the proof”-type derivations and Python stubs. ChatGPT had just received PDF support so wth, in goes the complete assignment, and out comes a report in Latex. The TA even gave me a little star. This was the golden era, before AI-slop had made it to the vocabulary.
Unethical? Yes.
In line with course goals? Also yes.

I remember my dad trying to make me fall in love with The Beatles. He loved The Beatles. I sat there quietly on the sofa while he got to relive his adolescence. The experience felt less like discovering something together and more like being a prop in someone else’s nostalgia.
I can’t help getting the same feeling from this blog post. “Look at this amazing CD player!” Cool, Dad. I’m genuinely happy for you. Meanwhile, Katie just got an iPhone 17 in her Easter egg. I'm a dad myself, and I dread the moment my daughters find out about TikTok...

Personally I would prioritize banning things like smoking, alcohol and meat.
But then again, it’s kinda a free world. You can’t just ban everything. I think an age ban is a good middle road.

> the ruination of the web and/or the destruction of entire career paths
The web is only about 30 years old and has never existed in some fixed, ideal state. Sure, it’s noisier and increasingly full of AI-generated slop, but are we already at the “everything was better in the old days” stage?
As for the destruction of career paths, technological change has been doing that for centuries. Digitization alone transformed or eliminated countless professions. I’d be curious what the authors’ moral stance is on those disruptions. Is the concern specifically about AI, or about technological progress more generally?
I put this blog under the old grumpy man file for now.

Actually, one hour of overtime should cost twice as much, if not more. When I worked on movie sets, hour 1-8 was ordinary pay. Hour 8-12 was 1/5 of the daily pay an hour, hour 12-15 1/3 of daily pay an hour and so on. This forced production companies to front load effort on planning.

> Just like artisans and craftsmen that were replaced by assembly line workers more than a century ago
Do you really need to go that far back for a comparison? We no longer need human computers to perform tedious calculations, or typists to draft and distribute correspondence.
The simplification of frontend development was never a final state. It has always been continuously evolving through abstraction and automation.
