I love that we have new ways to solve problems. And it's been hard to accept that my own unique intelligence—which I've spent decades cultivating—just isn't as important as it used to be. I am developing new ways of thinking to better adapt to an AI-enhanced world, but I'm not done with the mourning process. We're all finding our way through this.

I'm open to this correlation. But I wonder about causality. Adverse childhood experiences are significantly associated with both impulsivity and future earning potential. Breaking the cycle of poverty is difficult, but I'm not an expert on where the best investments to solve this problem would be.

Very cool. This will likely become my default digital source. Much more extensive than the other online options. I still prefer the discrete clustering of Roget's, but this blows away anything else I've found.

That's the one I have. I've had an older version in the past but misplaced it years ago. This one does the trick, but like the article author says: it is a weighty book. (I like that.)

Pleased to see Roget's thesaurus here. It's a fantastic resource without a great digital equivalent. I've found LLMs helpful in a pinch (and it's certainly better than a standard thesaurus), but Roget's is still the book I turn to for tricky word-picking problems.

Perverse incentives have always been the purview of bad management. Measuring things that don't cause success is easier than figuring out what actually matters. (It's also why I don't practice corporate medicine anymore.)

So true. Writing the code was so helpful for learning what it meant. It takes much more investment to go back to the code LLMs write to figure out what's actually happening and weigh everything.

"I read the code." -Mitchell Hashimoto
Great code needs great understanding and agents need excellent guidance. Even in my current solo-dev work, I can't imagine making a production commit I haven't read until I understand it. I own the consequences of my code; that's a responsibility AI agents can't take.

I like the optimism in this, and the rightful identification of many important bottlenecks.
It's important to recognize that many of the remaining medical problems are very hard to solve. And while I'm still hopeful for relatively simple answers to some, successful interventions for others often require changes across multiple systems, and at economic or social costs we haven't been willing to bear. Identifying new technical solutions across all stages of research is important. But we also struggle to implement many basic interventions that already work.
