It's people who speak french not being able to make a choice about their children's education, yes it's weird, and no it's not judgemental to wonder why parents can't make a very basic decision in their child's education.

The reason that "AI-detractors won't see the light" is that some people care about the quality of their work, AND ACTUALLY LIKE SOLVING PROBLEMS.

just because something makes a lot of money doesn't mean it's worth doing; there's this particular brainworm infecting AI enthusiasts that currently profitable == valuable. Tiktok is a profitable company, that doesn't mean it provides a service that is inherently valuable to humanity.

I think everyone here is missing the point that while data centers may have may of the same negative effects on the community, THEY DON'T PROVIDE ANYTHING IN RETURN.

Just because you've sold your soul to Anthropic and can't feed yourself with consulting ChatGPT doesn't mean that these people are stupid or crazy for not wanting a data center in their backyard. It's also a pretty big deficiency in moral fiber to object to people working against something that is good for yourself and terrible for everyone else. The best equivalent I can think of would be CEOs complaining about how terrible it is that unions are allowed to exist.
