I took part in an OFCOM (govt. Office of Communications) consultation on the future of UK public sector broadcasting in 2003-4, shortly before Youtube was born.
My suggestion was for the BBC to expand their definition of 'public sector broadcasting' to include facilitating the means of video distribution for communities ... kinda like Youtube in fact. The idea didn't resonate and was not mentioned in the report.
Around that time I also attended a meeting with some BBC bods, we were trying to promote Guerilla TV, a truly innovative and grass roots network that placed media servers and access points at strategic network nodes like universities (broadband was very sparse in those days). Nothing happened, opportunity missed.
To be fair, the BBC did accomplish some good stuff in those times too, notably Ashley Highfield and his team working on iPlayer, etc. But I've always thought the BBC made a strategic blunder by not doing more to enable grass roots content.

When I was a teenager my aunt got me and my brother some tickets to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show - the original west end theater production: "you must see this". We had front row seats for a weekday matinee performance, Tim Curry was in the middle of a long run as Dr Frank-N-Furter - and boy, he blew our little socks off. I have never been present at such powerful stage magnetism before or since. The film version sorta captured it somewhat, but in the flesh he was unbelievable, powerful and ... divine.

Yes, this is my approach now: a home server with devices connected via Tailscale. I'm starting to do more from my phone and less on the laptop.
I haven't added my iPad to the Tailnet yet but i reckon that it could become a very comfortable and productive device for me.

There is another aspect to this that I find even worse than LLM writing style: badly-human-written documents and posts.
You know this: you read something and it's like 'here's a mass of poorly structured text, it's not clear what the points are, it reads ugly, I have to read to the end to discover that there are no points! Or if there are points i now have to reread it. What a lot of effort.'
LLMs have annoying grammatical tics and can have other problems too, like the author says, but sometimes they can help to take bad writing and make it clear and more digestible.

I use the LLM-wiki pattern for a structured directory of topic folders of .md files, and made it also compatible with the Open Knowledge Format [1].
My agent (Hermes) responds to a made-up command "vaultize this doc/link/text, etc" to add new .md files in the right format in the right place. The agent does a pretty good job of maintaining the index.md file, cross-links, etc.
A Quartz website builder creates a static site on my server, each MD file is a web page, and rebuilds when a new file is added [2]. This setup gives me a useful knowledge base with a great UX - across all the devices on my Tailnet, no need to run Obsidian Sync, or Syncthing.
This system is simple and works well, but i think it could maybe benefit from a memory system like Honcho to make it more effective as it scales.
[1] https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/data-analytics/how-th...
[2] https://quartz.jzhao.xyz/
