I think you’re missing the point of Dune. They had their Butlerian Jihad and won - the machines were banned. And what did it get them? Feudalism, cartels, stagnation. Does anyone seriously want to live in the Dune universe?

The problem isn’t in the thinking machines, it’s in who owns them and gets our rent. We need open source models running on dirt cheap hardware.

Yocto? Nobody is expecting Yocto for deeply embedded systems likely to be built on this OS. It’s closer to FreeRTOS, Zephyr, Embassy, but with this additional hardware-level safety guarantees.

There’s tons of variants of ZFC without the “infinity”. Constructivism has a long and deep history in mathematics and it’s probably going to become dominant in the future.

Ironically Python is the worst language for everything you’ve described. Packaging is pain, wheels are pain, everything breaks all the time. It’s only great for those standalone scripts. Nobody in their right mind would design Python the way it turned out if the goal was to be the main ML language.

I’m not suggesting grandpa reads code, contributors do. We all know that most commercial code is much shittier than open source. Sure, commercial code usually covers more edge cases and has better UX, but is cobbled together from legacy and random product asks.

I think this is a false dichotomy. Open hardware with open source software would be more protected simply by being more stress tested and vetted by more people. If you need even more protection you can employ zero-knowledge proofs and other trustless technologies. I have long been dreaming about some kind of hardware/software co-op creating non-enshittifying versions of thermostats, electric kettles, EV chargers, solar inverters, etc, etc. Hackable for people who want it, simply non-rent-seeking for everyone else.
