New comment by fetus8 in "Plex laid off the whole player team"

fetus8 — Wed, 21 Oct 2026 20:03:54 +0000

I was watching a movie last night with the updated Apple TV app last night and said to myself, it's time, this UX update has pushed me over the edge. Jellyfish migration is happening this weekend.

I never stopped using Sublime, I’ve tried all sorts of new/modern text editors and always revert back. I personally just love the simplicity and familiarity.

New comment by fetus8 in "OnePlus to Pull Out of American and European Markets"

fetus8 — Wed, 15 Jul 2026 16:49:31 +0000

sad to see but not unexpected. Picked up a OnePlus 15 last winter to screw around with GameHub since the 15 has a lot of ram and the most recent snapdragon 8 elite. It’s such a solidly designed device with a nice flavor of mostly stock android.

software updates have been lacking, which was the writing on the wall. Rip to a real one.

New comment by fetus8 in "Sam Neill has died"

Possession is such a fantastically special movie, heavily due to Neill and Adjani’s performances.

RIP to a real one.

New comment by fetus8 in "Show HN: Trophikos – a calm, ad-free recipe and cocktail library for iOS"

fetus8 — Fri, 26 Jun 2026 18:49:29 +0000

Well this is late, as the post got flagged and reinstated, so I didn't get a chance to update with this comment, but better late than never:

Hi HN, I'm a solo developer and Trophikos is something I built mostly to scratch my own itch.

Most recipe apps I tried didn't fit what I was looking for, I wanted something to keep track of the food I cook, and the cocktails I make, plus a way to share something nicely formatted with the people in my life.

It's native to Apple platforms, there's no advertising and no third-party analytics, and sync runs through your own iCloud account rather than a server I control. Premium features (iCloud sync, custom themes, an Apple TV companion) are behind a subscription; the app itself is free to try. Honest tradeoffs: it's iOS-only right now (macOS is on my list, not built yet), and it's deliberately not a meal planner or a discovery feed, if you want those, this isn't the app. It's a library for things you already cook.

I've been thinking about this idea and concept for the past couple years, but finally started designing and building late last year. I am really excited to have it out in the world finally.

Happy to answer anything about the design decisions, the privacy approach, or anything else I'd genuinely value feedback, including the critical kind.

Thank you! I haven’t implemented support for importing from IG, would you drop a couple of links and I’ll take a look and see! Searching on meta anything is so bad.

fetus8 — Mon, 15 Jun 2026 02:59:17 +0000

Hi, I’m working on Trophikos, a recipe organization app for iOS. Not a meal planner, not a social feed. Just a calm, well-designed place to collect your own recipes, food, baked goods, and even native support for cocktails. Manual entry, OCR importing, URL importing, and the ability to share and export.

I’m still actively working on it but just submitted to App Store review. TestFlight is open if anyone wants to try it before launch: https://testflight.apple.com/join/baWAQ4tj

Happy to hear any feedback, especially from people who currently store recipes across Notes, screenshots, and 15 open browser tabs.

I am actively working to support iOS 27 (and the other 27 OS’s) and will be posting development updates over on mastodon: https://mastodon.social/@saxtechsolutions

New comment by fetus8 in "New Lifetime Plex Pass Pricing"

fetus8 — Tue, 19 May 2026 14:37:12 +0000

How can they justify an exponential price increase like this? The blog post doesn’t really mention new features aside from bringing features from the desktop website to the mobile app…

Even though I bought my lifetime membership years ago, I think it’s time to explore other options. I don’t like this.

on Tuesday, with 4.6, I waited for my 5 hour window to reset, asked it to resume, and it burned up all my tokens for the next 5 hour window and ran for less than 10 seconds. I’ve never cancelled a subscription so fast.

New comment by fetus8 in "Do Back-End Developers Even Have Portfolios?"

fetus8 — Wed, 05 Mar 2025 19:03:33 +0000

I am not a full back-end developer, more full stack currently. I do not have a portfolio. Linking to github and highlighting projects is usually enough for prospective employers and gets me into interviews.

New comment by fetus8 in "Instagram deals reveal Meta is offering TikTok creators as much as $300k to post"

fetus8 — Tue, 28 Jan 2025 20:33:13 +0000

Meta's algorithm on IG has gone so far down the toilet over the years. Before I deleted my account last year, I'd have to scroll through 5-7 sponsored posts before I'd actually see something from someone I actually follow. Nevermind the amount of regular old ads that were inserted into my feed.

New comment by fetus8 in "Is Colorado's EV incentive worth it?"

fetus8 — Tue, 28 Jan 2025 17:24:50 +0000

My brother jumped on the Ioniq 5 deal back in October and just got hit with the surprisingly high registration fees too. I know registration fees in CO are high, but having people jump on sub $200 a month car payments and then expecting them to pay $1000+ or more to register feels bad.

New comment by fetus8 in "Ask HN: What are your personal red flags when you're interviewing at a company?"

fetus8 — Tue, 11 Jun 2024 20:33:12 +0000

Recently interviewed with a startup, and during the process via email, I was constantly communicating with different people. After the 3rd interview with the CTO, I thought they ghosted me and emailed the last interviewer and got no response. Over a week later the director of engineering emailed me to schedule the 3rd interview with the CTO. I immediately knew that they had internal communication issues and decided I wasn't going to pursue the role further.

My current role has a somewhat misleading title, but to offset that I make sure I really highlight my experience and the projects I've worked on. If an interviewer starts asking me about my title and why I'm applying for something more 'generic' I immediately know they didn't read my resume or pay attention and I'm out.

Years ago I walked out of an all day interview, maybe 2 hours in, because one of the engineers was on his phone the entire time, seemingly just scrolling and not paying attention.
