It totally did work! I updated the apps and the docs (and the blog post) to reflect this. It is pretty self-involved and requires an active Apple Developer subscription – but it does get everything running without disabling SIP.

That’s exactly what I figured. Even though I feel it should have been Drobo’s responsibility to at least provide a detailed doc before going under.

They must have sold quite a few of these units, and I figure I’m one of the few (saw someone on Reddit reacting to a post to this with their own vibe-coded dashboard – which of course looks eerily similar) customers that went through such lengths to give their device a few more years. Providing an « official » open-source driver might have prevented some more e-wase – and token use!

That’s exactly the path I would have gone, ask clarifying question to confuse the interviewers: - Is my boat actually floating in the lake? - Is the lake filled with water? - If yes, what is the temperature gradient of that water from top to bottom? - How deep is the lake at the spot the ball is dropped? - What is the current time and phase of the moon, and what are the exact coordinates of the ball drop? - Are we doing this during some « end of the world gravitational collapse » event?

This would show them three things (which they did were not trying to find out, or maybe): 1. I think these questions are stupid. 2. I know that clear requirements and edge-cases are important 3. I’m an asshole and possibly not fun at parties

Isn’t the point of an API to have two computers talk to each other? As in “if I want safeguards for humans, it would be my responsability to put them BEFORE calling that API”?

I think this is very dangerous perspective. A lot of attacks on infra are automated, just try to expose a Windows XP machine to the internet for a day and see with how much malware you end up with. If you leave your security unchecked, you will end up attacked; not by someone targeting you specifically, but having all your data encrypted for ransom might still create a problem for you (even if the attacker doesn’t care about YOUR data specifically).

More like buying a 99$ “12 to 15 hour recording” pack. Also created real tangible waste, I’m failing to see how recycling a bunch (what are they expecting to sell, hundreds-of-thousands order of magnitude?) of 99$ rings after two years will be worth it (how much material, and for what worth, can they really exctract?).

Operation Flashpoint having also been spun off into “VBS” (Virtual Battlespace Systems) a military combat simulator whose first client/user was incedentally the USMC. So AA’s was probably arguably the first mainstream (from the heavy promotion and the fact it was free, something out of the ordinary for an “AAA Game” at the time) “realistic shooter”, but certainly not the first.
