i don't know enough to comment on the cost of "normal" living, but think about what happens in NYC the moment you get laid off or, even worse, get sick. I think at that point Paris starts becoming a lot more attractive if you're working class..

Yes, that is exactly related to the point OP was trying to make? Where does this crime come from? Maybe instead of useless, if not counter-productive mass incarceration, we should focus on rehabilitation and more importantly improving social injustices that are the causes of the higher crime rate sin the US.

i don't think gp necessarily meant that everything always worked out well and that there never were disagreements. I might be very wrong but what i took away from it was that no matter how much of a plan / how strong a policy you make, you're going to need to make some compromises unless you want to become the sort of parents we had (generalizing greatly).

I'm still a ways off from needing this specific advice (child is 2 ½), but i feel like the that is exactly how i wish i had been treated as a kid. Not what i wanted back then, which was obviously to just do everything i wanted to do, but what, looking back, i believe would've been great. Thank you.

In germany as well, mainly in "Lustiges Taschenbuch" which still exists (new issues being released, still mainly translated from italian i believe).

When my family moved to the US when i was 10, i was shocked that no equivalent existed! And hugely disappointed by the US comic book culture because, although 10 year old me really liked the images, it felt impossible to know what was going on without access to all the volumes.

Reading through the comments, the oddest thing to me is that practically no one talked about the question of comfort. I live and come from northern europe, so like most people and households here we take off our shoes. I guess it's mainly because the weather is shit here half the year but a big part is also that it's just awesome to remove your shoes at home!

I really like ayu (mirage is my favorite as well) and pretty much use the colors everywhere except for syntax highlighting where I just can't switch away from monokai pro.

Same for me. I've been using monokai and, since it came out, monokai pro. Every year or so I look at what new themes are out there and try the popular ones for a bit but nothing hits that sweet spot of aesthetically pleasing and functional so well for me.

A couple of months ago I asked my wife to put on an a specific album in the car. I was surprised to find out she had just turned on the spotify artist shuffle. She then explained that this is how she listens to all music on spotify: search artist, press the big green button. This is very anecdotal, but since then i have been amazed to find out that a huge chunk of < 30y olds i have asked listen to music exactly this way.

I'm still not sure if those users use spotify this way because the ui is so bad or if the ui is molded towards those users...

Don't know where you're getting this from. All sources i could find talk about a twitter account that _could_ belong to the Dayton, OH shooter, on which he _follows_ Antifa members. You gotta admit that's pretty far from the relation of 8chan to the El Paso shooter...

The author seems to have suffered a bad case of misunderstanding the "Berliner Schnauze"...

I, unfortunately, also read the whole linked opinion piece on german humor from the economist [0] which I almost disliked even more. I might just feel insulted (being German) but please: calling out "Instead of a raised eyebrow, we get full-body signals to laugh now." from the country that gave us laugh-tracks...

i agree, "verletzt" fits quite well. Especially if, like in english, you pair it with "Gefühle".
