I'm looking for tools or methods to better curate the deluge and cacophony of notifications, emails, texts and phone calls I imagine we are all getting inundated with everyday with increasing entropy and volume.
The amount of "notifications" I get everyday is overwhelming to the point where I often decide to switch my phone to "silent", leave my phone in another room, and even turn it off for periods of time. The problem with this is that I miss important things and they often get buried.
I've spent hours and hours unsubscribing, deleting, uninstalling, toggling settings, but then I find myself reinstalling, resubscribing. It's just a mess, and exhausting to just think about.
The reason I'm writing this is partially to vent. I just realized that my closest friend's birthday was a few weeks ago. I had it in my calendar, but never saw the notification. Yes, I should be more organized and Yes, it's not the end of the world. but damnit, i get so much crap from this bionic appendage, and still I cant use this tool to help me with remembering important things.
It just seems like its getting worse every year.
Hopefully this is helpful to others.
P.S. can we please stop with the "would you like all or some cookies" popup on every friggin website?
P.P.S. can websites stop asking for permission to invade my OS?
P.P.P.S. does anyone else ever want to run away and be an off-grid hermit?

My observation has been that as long as basic human needs are easily obtained there is a natural tendency to become complacent and go with the flow.
Another perspective could be: what’s so bad about people taking longer to mature? In a way it points to the possibility that we have evolved to a society that allows children to be children for longer. The real problem is that biologically their bodies are screaming for reproduction which becomes confusing and stressful. Perhaps in the future we will deal with this in creative and healthy new ways

Hi HN,
As a mechanical engineer between jobs with a lot of interest in computer science, and a little less than halfway through my career I find myself needing new skills to stay competitive.
Some thoughts I’ve had are:
R programming
Project management professional
CompTIA certs
3D CAD Certs
Amazon web services
Python
Satellite communications
Robotics
Blockchain
C++
Really not sure where to focus right now and would love some input and feedback about what’s in demand. I’ve enjoyed following HN for many years even if a lot of the posts are over my head I still find it fascinating.
Thanks!

Hi HN,
I have two projects in mind, both require web scraping (to build a dataset) and data analysis (random forest).
Down the line I would like to automate everything, but for now my goal is to create a process (scripts and programs) that I can perform to get my analysis as needed.
I'm asking for guidance on getting started with web scraping and data analysis. I have a beginner level understanding of R-Programming, which seems to be a great choice for analysis.
I have zero experience with web scraping. I'm trying to decide between Python, VBS and Bash scripting. I have a little experience with all three.
I'm also thinking about getting some books and taking some online classes, any recommendations?
Thank you all in advance.
P.S. The projects have to do with stock market swing trading and weather patterns.
