<p>Anecdotally, our firm's Covid hires were just okay. The recent hires are better.  So my hunch is the weaker CS candidates were able to get jobs back during Covid, while today, they are left out.</p>

<p>There is good advice here for sure, but the tone seemed focused on growing your career rather than "saving" it.  Most people now want to know how to still be employed in this industry 10 years from now. Maybe this advice will be consistent with this goal, but I fear climbing the corporate ladder could make you more vulnerable to cuts and lead to burnout.</p>

<p>There still is value with the casual acquaintances.  Just because a person is replaceable doesn't mean they are not valuable when present.  My neighbor who I barely talk to has helped me out when I am in a bind.  Even if a new neighbor moves in and replaces him, the original neighbor was valuable and gave me a sense of security, peace, and community while he was present.</p>

<p>GPS watches don't need service, they just need line of site to the GPS satellites.  Uploading to Strava requires service, but that can be done any time after the activity.</p>

<p>I think 2001 and 2002 were worse than 2000.  I was lucky to find a job in 2002 after graduating.  There were hiring freezes and layoffs everywhere.</p>

<p>It is a "reasonable" argument to keep yourself in the game, but it is sad nonetheless.  You sacrifice your morals and do bad things, so if things get way worse, maybe you will be in a position to stop something from really bad from happening.  Of course, you might just end up participating in the really bad thing.</p>
