It appears this guy is a low hanging fruit with previous cybercrime convictions that they grabbed to “send a message” to the group. But it doesn’t seem like they even know the identities of rest of the group members.

New comment by garyfirestorm in "Tell HN: OpenAI keeps re-enabling the 'allow training' setting"

garyfirestorm — Thu, 10 Sep 2026 15:42:00 +0000

Do you think the training process will retain these artifacts? I doubt it. If they were simply stealing the content - sure it would make sense - but I suspect they’re feeding it into training data and RL might distill these out.

> Second, you miscomprehended the article. The employee did not "threaten to ruin a prominent researcher's career"…

Proceeds to ask removal of another coauthor or else we totally discredit you - phrased as why would you do this to yourself.

You can always flash and factory reset. I’d bet 99.9% of phones on eBay are by and for general public and not some esoteric zero days in the wild that your comment makes it sound like.

New comment by garyfirestorm in "Cops Used Flock to Track a Man Across State Lines for a Pretextual Weed Search"

garyfirestorm — Wed, 05 Aug 2026 15:52:07 +0000

IANAL - if they break the bail conditions the judge may issue a warrant depending on severity, clearly a warrant was not issued here, otherwise there’s no need for pretext like you said.

Article also states bail jumping charge was dismissed but the weed charge is the only charge that remains.

New comment by garyfirestorm in "US Government targets Cop City protester over phone operating system"

garyfirestorm — Thu, 23 Jul 2026 23:17:33 +0000

I don’t think courts care about technicality here. They’re going to simply ask “why didn’t it unlock like a normal phone does” -> aka you’re deliberately hiding evidence from us.

I’m sure this case will be dropped because it will open bigger can of worms and may jeopardize the current practice of warrantless invasive searches at the entry points. Secretly I hope this goes to Supreme Court and once and for all they clarify on “constitution doesn’t apply at the border” piece of thinking

New comment by garyfirestorm in "My favorite keyboards"

What are those trackpads/touchpads between the left and right boards? What cables are those that are attached to both the keyboard and trackpad. Looks almost like an Ethernet cable but must be a usbC. Does anyone know the type/brand of the cable.

It depends. Mediocre doctor in a remote area with right tooling assistance as opposed to no one being available for someone who urgently needs one? Yeah this should be a thing. Should a software bro in NY perform it in dark alley despite having best doctors few blocks away? Maybe not…
