With the increased caliber of software folks in Trumps orbit, my sense is we will have a much more informed decision from the Whitehouse on this topic and whether the US should weigh into the fray with the UK.
as a side note, its really baffling what this capability would actually provide for? Any serious criminal isn't using icloud backup or even an iPhone in the first place. So this is just a shit outcome for the general population.
If this goes through, I look forward to the news of the world expose on some cabinet members personal details

it's often a corporate's need for new revenue and security that causes the machine to march on. Just look at this TPM Win 10 upgrade issue.
My 2011 i5 desktop is still happily chugging away as a build server, home storage, and remote host. But oh yes, it will have to be nuked, thanks to MSFT policies.

clearly, google hasn't paid enough campaign donations vis-a-vis Microsoft.
This is just political corruption feigning as doing the right thing for the country.
we are having the wrong debate and are being distracted by the sideshow.
in many ways this is a test balloon for public support to go after big tech as a narrative around censorship over misinformation that will explode over the next few years

I suspect there is no available dataset that can teach the models to learn this. The enjoyment of music is entirely internalized. Skipping a track is an incredibly low fidelity data point.
I've often wondered if Spotify could capture volume control data as part of a track to see if that produces better training data. But again its still too low fidelity.

This.
Every nation-state will be in the game. Private enterprise will be in the game. Bitcoin-funded individuals will be in the game. Criminal enterprises will be in the game.
How does one company building a safe version stop that?
If I have access to hardware and data how does a safety layer get enforced? Regulations are for organizations that care about public perception, the law, and stock prices. Criminals and nation-states are not affected by these things
It seems to me enforcement is likely only possible at the hardware layer, which means the safety mechanisms need to be enforced throughout the hardware supply chain for training or inference.
You don't think the Chinese government or US government will ignore this if its in their interest?

no chance these incumbent dealers have their fingers deep in politics.
in Seattle companies like Rivian cannot even tell you the price in the retail store due to laws that incumbent dealers pushed through making it illegal know full well that a lack of price will prevent sales.
Tesla is the one exception who was grandfathered in before the law was changed.
