<p>ffmpeg does more than hardware decoding. For example scaling, cropping, changing colors, effects. All this stuff can benefit from vectorized operations (on CPU or GPU).</p>

<p>I once used it to get a 4x speedup of sqrt computations, by using SIMD. It was quite fun, and also quite self contained and manageable.<p>The library sqrt handles all kinds of edge-cases which prevent the compiler from autovectorizing it.</p>

<p>FXCM forex trading broker covered a similar sized loss of client money (not hack) when EUR/CHF was unpegged in 2015.<p>Since it was a profitable broker business, another bigger broker gave them the money to plug the loss in exchange for taking over the business.</p>
