> The value is being able to easily and robustly verify that my device hasn't been compromised.
That is impossible.
"secure" devices get silently tampered with everyday.
You can never guarantee that.

> but the way this will be used is by corporations to lock us out into approved Linux distributions. Linux will be effectively owned by RedHat and Microsoft, the signing authority.
This is the intent of the Poettering and Brauner.

> if the bank or Netflix want to send me a locked down terminal to act as a portal to their services, I guess I would be fine with using it to access (just) their services
They would only do it to assert more control over you and in Netflix's case, force more ads on you.
It is why I never use any company's apps.
If they make it a requirement, I will just close my account.

Yup
Poettering is a well-known Linux saboteur, along with Red Hat.Without RH pushing his trash, he is not really that big of a threat.
Just like de Icaza, another saboteur, ran off to MS. That is the tell-tell sign for people not convinced that either person's work in FOSS existed to cause damage.
No, this is not a snarky, sarcastic comment. Trust Amutable at your own peril.

> Most gamers don't give a shit about openness.
Most gamers are idiots. They are okay paying exorbitant sums for broken games and most have no problem with forced rootkits.
I don't think gaming is or should be driving people to Linux.
Microslop turning their OS into a data mining and ad platform should and is pushing normal, rational people to Linux. But, most gamers don't care about such things as long as they are getting their sweet, sweet dopamine hit.
Ironically, lower framerates(even though they are higher than the human eye and nervous system can perceive) on Windows 11 might push gamers onto Linux. They still want their rootkits, though.
It is always the dumbest reasons that get gamers upset.

Sure, why not stay home if that is the case?

So a high latency connection that is also susceptible to atmospheric effects and run by a madman is okay?
I am still on DSL because there is no fiber or 5g internet here yet*. And I live on the edge of an area with 500k people. DSL is good enough for 4k streaming video and anything else I need and costs me $65.
Why on earth would I want to make things worse by using starlink?
Of course, if I lived 50 miles from a gas station, that is different. But living rural has many risks and downsides that the people out there accept.
*This is the real issue. If corporations had to put its customers(and employees) on the same level as shareholders(very few actually benefit the corporation directly because they don't buy stock directly from the company) a lot of problems would be solved. Or, if companies realized that taking care of the customer and employees first means that everything else will follow.
