Not relevant to this link but I was thinking about the allegations of Chinese AI companies distilling from the big frontier American ones. And I came to the conclusion: I don’t care.

Who cares? China has always copied and then copied the means of production and then out produced. See also Tesla and now all the Chinese cars eating their lunch.

As long as I get really solid AI models for cheap that do what I need I don’t care if they’re Chinese or otherwise.

I’ll still never use Grok from SpaceX AI cuz eww no, I have principles. ;-)

This is predatory. I don’t like it. They should just split the cost equally over the number of months so at the end you have paid it off.

Not saying the heavy hand of the Xi admin and Chinese communism is equivalent to the outright lawless, corrupt, grifting and vindictive and hateful administration that is Trump 2.0 ... but it's pretty much * makes the 6 7 motion that the kids do * this for me.

China will just do a better job -- if they do this at all -- of storing, collating, indexing, and using data from their state sponsored and championed AI labs to use that against the US. [1]

The US under this admin is doing the same, attacking universities, allies, it's own citizens.

The two governments are operating more or less the same. Ergo the ai models from each country's ai companies shant be trusted either.

Apparently Google and team will build ASICs to run Gemini even though they have TPUs and it’ll be somewhat dynamic since the weights can be made modular [1]
