Liverpool John Moores University doesn’t have a reputation - the only one it’s got is that it’s a former polytechnic attended by people who are never going to cope in the real parts of academia at even the nearby University of Liverpool. Cambridge would have never given this man a degree never mind a doctorate, but once he had one it was a pass to getting inside.

Academia isn’t the criminal justice system though, if you have, for example, cheated on your doctorate you can hold your hands up and admit it and do another doctorate.

Yeah absolutely this. People seem to be unable to recognise that Britain and the USA are radically different places with different histories and approaches to basically everything. The common language creates the impression that they’re basically the same place.

The issue is that the claims of sociology struggle with falsifiability, or at least have a tendency to create positions which don’t admit refutation.
I don’t wish this poor man ill, and a huge mess has been created at every level it seems, all around him. Having read some of his contentious thesis the issue that arose for me, beyond the plaigarism question, was that it was generally hyperbolic and at points, word salad, unable to present a target that could be refuted or argued against. Zero clue what Cambridge were doing with and to this guy, or what the standards are for appointing people and critiquing their work if it’s feeding a prevailing narrative. I know John Moores, who awarded his PhD is far from rigorous and I know from experience that there is almost nothing that would have stopped them awarding him the doctorate once the work was complete, regardless whether it was plagiarised or didn’t stand up to scrutiny from anywhere outside of his small angle on sociological discourse. This all points to him being a symptom of an extremely widespread and serious issue that has arisen within British academia, not a cause of anything major.
I wouldn’t have wished him dead though, this is pretty tragic that the intense scrutiny over what should be a very niche and minor academic issue inside a university got blown up into front page news. He didn’t deserve or warrant that kind of scrutiny either, so has clearly completely collapsed from it, because it would be hard for anyone to take.

Laughable to cite and reiterate the idea that Google is cooked where it comes to SoTA and AI in general when they operate, reliably and successfully for decades, one of the largest computing infrastructures on Earth and will likely continue to usefully serve the 90% of AI requests that don’t involve managing large codebases. Also seems strange to suggest that Google would need to Aquihire a company like Thinking Machines when it could spin up their AI model in a couple of weeks on its own TPUs if it felt like it. Demis likely wants to focus on his specific interest at the junction of biochemistry, neurobiology and computation which is more specific and unique to Demis than building a general purpose Q&A search model.

It would need to be defended in court yeah, but the absence of that defence doesn't automatically make it so it falls under the GPL and can be included in MIT licensed code just because the copyright holder doesn't know about it to defend it or refuse to be part of your software. Maybe you can argue the technicality but certainly not in the spirit of open source. There would be hundreds of other breakbeats you could include and give away under your MIT license if that were the case.

why is the Amen Brother breakbeat included in this software as if it's open source and GPL / MIT license? Just because something has been stolen a million times, that doesn't make it public domain, it's still under copyright and owned by its publisher, who I'm pretty certain has never given it away under a free license.

Yeah this. I feel like OpenAI and Anthropic aren't going to usefully define "AGI" if they really really can't define "sandbox" either.
Unplug the thing, like, completely off the internet, no ethernet, air gapped, like the rack completely sandboxed off connections and even monitors or screens. Like, put it into an actual sandpit if you need to. If it hacks its way out of that, colour me impressed, and scared.
OpenAI hacking HuggingFace and calling it an accident is just way too convenient and fishy. This ultimately proves one thing: it wasn't sandboxed.
Don't believe the hype.
