Yep, simple blur seems most classy, thanks for mentioning that as it wasn't directly implied by "virtual background". To be clear, Google Meet does not support a simple blur on Firefox. (I could use a virtual camera, but as I mentioned in another comment.. I don't care enough)

Would you say more? Are you speaking as a Canadian?

We have alternative words that fully qualify the US.. and I’m probably the only one on HN I’ve ever observe to use them (and I’m from the US): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demonyms_for_the_United_States...

(BTW the reason I use US-American is that I’ve learned from my Latin American friends that they also consider themselves American. My Canadian friends do not..)

Mobile Safari reader mode was effective for me. Maybe because I have Purify for ad blocking (which didn’t remove transparent gray overlay, unfortunately).

Not a strawman (I don't think? not sure what you meant by this..), just very curious. You have a setup that is in between useless when grid is down, and fully self-sufficient. Seems possibly very practical to me, but I haven't heard of it before.

Would you spell it out for us? What exactly happens when the grid fails at your site? Overnight, obviously you have no power. Then "the sun rises" but surely if there's any load, it must get above a certain point in the sky before it can run your house and charge your EVs, especially in the winter. And same thing in the afternoon, there must be a point where the sun is shining but too low in the sky and the load cannot be sustained- what exactly happens then?

(also, no clouds where you are?)

MacOS Big Sur out of the box does not show a title bar for the after-screenshot editor. How do I configure it to show a title bar so I can use your tip?

I didn't say in advance. After the fact is likely best, but in a seamless flow that doesn't require using Finder, the terminal, or any other tool. Indeed Gnome solves after the fact, allowing you to just accept the default generated filename, or specify your own, with zero friction.

As others in the thread mention, once you've taken the screenshot, it helpfully dumps you in "the editor" (is this Preview.app? I don't know because it doesn't have a title bar..). In the editor, I am give then option to do a bunch of things, but no option to rename the screenshot. This is disappointing. Hence I was hoping somebody here could fill me in on the trick that will make me happy..

(my complaint scoped to Big Sur btw)

My favorite instance of this is bugs in open source projects. I worked briefly in streaming video - like for 3 months - and in that time concluded that the very, very, very old bugs in ffmpeg actually constituted some of the most reliable behaviors on which I could confidently depend.

Shameless question: is there a special trick to specify a filename for my screenshots in macOS? I manually rename after, and it's cumbersome.
