One wonders if Theranos had been a software company, would she be lauded instead for her bold moves? Would she be on her fourth company instead of in prison? Or would she need to be male? Just seeing how the AI companies are allowed to behave.

Epstein seems to have gotten away with defrauding a couple billionaires and becoming rich and super connected in the process.

Neil Asher has a short story set in the Polity Universe where a member of an advanced ancient alien race thought to be extinct is discovered in cryostasis. Upon de-thawing the creature, they discover it's sea dwelling using chemical scent as it's primary sense with no vision or sound, making communication very difficult. But the creature itself is able to manipulate it's environment until it manufactures a human conduit for learning and communication with the human AIs, and finally the humans.

That's not an exhaustive definition, creating also means adding new stuff to the mix often involving leaps of imagination. Or we would have been stuck with the same words, music, tools, programming languages from the beginning. It's hard to see we would have even gotten started without those leaps and new ideas, genres, stories, programming paradigms coming about. Humans have been creating new things from the start.

How much free time would we have now if the current gains from capitalism were evenly distributed (or any previous economic system)? What makes you think automation will be different?

Our radio waves become very faint at light year out. You need a powerful radio signal for a long enough time directed at locations where aliens might be listening. The SETI astronomer Jill Tartar suggested committing to a 60,000 year project if we want a decent chance of being heard, assuming someone is out there in our galaxy listening over that time period.

Or there is a lot of nuance and long history of arguments behind concepts like free will, consciousness, realism, emergence. You can't simplify the arguments without glossing over a lot of detail. Philosophers prattle on because they're responding to all that. They're aware of the various objections to their position.

I will never support deporting people already here unless they commit felonies. It's cruel and immoral. People come here for a better life and work opportunities, the immigration system needs reform, and nobody goes after the employers who typically support Republicans.

This is a huge, wealthy country. There's plenty of room and economic opportunity. The undocumented are not the problem. They're scape goated.

But even setting all that aside, ICE and DHS need fundamental reform, so might as well abolish them and create new agencies with all new employees.

Russia is entirely to blame for invading Ukraine and targeting civilains. Stop being an apologist for a war criminal and dictator. How many troops has Russia lost? How many Russians have fled their oppressive regime since the invasion began? How much economic activity has been lost with the West? How much military equipment has been burned up? Russia had to turn to China and North Korea for help.

Ukraine will prevail.
