bitcoin is a cryptocurrency. this idea that bitcoin isn't crypto is relatively new and only bitcoin maximalists actually believe it. the industry certainly has moral people who behave themselves and they're not all bitcoin maximalists. it doesn't actually do any good to try to set bitcoin apart in an attempt to appeal to public sentiment. it just makes the whole thing reek of sectarian quarreling.

I had heard of ENS but yesterday I discovered that SNS is more affordable so I tried it out. now you can type gushinggranny.sol into Brave browser and it redirects to my peertube instance. SNS has A records too but I have not tried it yet. I am grateful to see that Brave browser is so forward thinking to support a decentralized DNS right out of the box and I am grateful to have found a usecase for NFTs that isn't completely stupid.

it's prohibitively expensive to access these tools. I have to identify myself and pay over £1000 to be allowed to access them. the agency either doesn't care about independent sites catching CSAM or they don't want independent admins finding out that these tools aren't very effective. alex gleason the fediverse dev tried contacting them about this problem and they didn't care at all.

ideological nonsense. money has to have scarcity. implementing scarce money with free open source software is not an affront to anything about it. FOSS only takes away the advantage of intellectual property. FOSS is not a magical weapon against the menace of capitalism or anything like that. it doesn't tarnish when you use it to make fancy accounting software or other things people may not like. your notion that FOSS has pure and impure uses is an affront to the purpose of FOSS. you don't get to decide what people should do with it.

facebook is not going to buy my fediverse instance or my XMPP server. "they will just buy whatever gets used" gets thrown around too much as a sort of impotent defeatism. I don't see them buying instances on federated networks running open source software, and these networks are growing. we have to stop having this 2007 mindset that it is still okay to try to dump millions of people into a large centralized microblogging site.

when I visit a church, they ask everyone for a little money so they can keep the lights on and do interesting things once in a while. nobody expects the church to KYC everyone who puts a dollar in the collection plate. why should that be any different if the meeting takes place on a website about something other than religion? I donate cryptocurrency to forums and microblogging services to help them keep the lights on. we should be treated the same even if we don't believe in god. the owner does not need to ask for permission from anybody or depend on an intermediary to accept the money and they do not need my information. if you don't see why this is of benefit to someone then I suggest you try to operate a forum and go through the trouble to make ends meet.

a big chunk of the population believes that the government should have a total monopoly over the issuance of currency and they should be able to control every aspect of how it gets accounted for and who should facilitate transactions, in order to prevent crime. these people have a complete disregard for individuals who are treated unfairly by the financial system. when some people are shut out of their access to banking and payment processing despite not doing anything illegal, and when others are unable to do business due to too much administrative overhead imposed by financial regulation, their suffering is excusable because crime is being prevented.
