Geo location aside, putting things off shore is really a way to drive up cost such as maintenance like mad and it makes even less sense when you are working with large surfaces rather than something designed around having height and wind tolerance.

China seems happy to export solar panels to anyone.. Taiwan would probably not like to be a big importer of something it can't procure from other trade partners at similar prices though. I think Taiwan wants tariff wars with China to reduce economic ties.

This is GPL code so decompiling isn't necessary or the problem.

Accepting over the wall low quality code and having a submitter for it who may know nothing about it makes it difficult to work any of this low quality code into the mainline kernel via its resource starved processes.

I'd categorize a cypherpunk as a very specific form a cyberpunk, so to me that's normal journalistic form to use both terms at some point in an article.

My teachers only commented/deducted if I mixed spellings in a single essay. If a teacher can't teach someone who uses either variant they probably have a stark educational deficit themselves.

Spending this much on a server's CPUs has been a pretty normal thing in DC/server rooms for a very long time, the rise of X86 in servers is a similar cheapening like the rise of ARM. It actually meant a lot of redesigning of applications to work with many entirely separate machines instead of the smallest large server that could cover the full load and maybe around an application process per core, all sharing direct access to the same storage, etc.

Unless I missed something this is a VPS in a cloud, so really its not about replacing hardware to get back up.

There's certainly an interesting problem of scale and redundancy where I think you need 3+ half full racks to really be efficiently running in DCs and then have to consider how their markup relates to your inefficiency if you are running a lot less.

Funny, I can imagine bash is a real improvement on ansible. I once started with bash, switched to bash in ansible and then to "good style" ansible and then to a nixops cluster.

There wasn't really a good point between bash and nix.

Most memory safety errors are from not being able to test things like whether you are really dropping references in all cases or whether your C++ additions are interacting with each other. C is not safe but it is safer than C++. Rust is not going to stop all run away memory possibilities but it isn't going to hide them like a JS GC.

If your goal is to ship to most users something that kind of works then there are certainly complex solutions that will do that.. If your goal is memory safety that's more like every device working as expected which is done with less bloat not more.

There are developers that earn that much, and the probability goes up at MS, Mozilla, etc, but I think a lot of qualified experienced Compiler developers exist who are earning less than the 150k a year when you consider the global market and smaller compilers. But the over all cost of a developer is not just their salary.

Really though I've found jobs similar to compiler developer for an ANSI standard compiler at big tech to include a lot of hazard pay for how disagreeable the job actually is compared to one with more freedom.

Apparently the nature of markets is offensive when the description of them doesn't go along with pavlovian expectations?

I've met a lot of people who couldn't find the job they wanted in the place they wanted anymore and joined Tech along the US coast, for the predominant wages which are a factor of supply and demand.

On the plus side, adding profanity once it is scanned for sounds like another way to weed out some commercial use without explicitly weeding out some commercial use..

That could be handy to an already annoyed maintainer.

Fine, but then the US has spent a terrifying amount of my money on sports and I want it all back if the point of their sophisticated pro-social spending (which strangely has to include private ventures getting handouts) is actually to extract wealth from the poor and the weak.

Er no, not really (past results != future results).. This high pay has worked out because there are jobs to move people to because demand has so far been expanding. If we are sick of the new output then your job will be filled by someone willing to take minimum wage.

Grades are almost guaranteed at Harvard Undergrad. A grader who gives out any Bs or less for any properly submitted paper can expect an outraged Professor to make them stop before he has to deal with the backlash which may include a lawyer.

This may vary by department or over time, but I think there's no reason to believe a Harvard Undergrad Alumni you meet ever did any college level work.
