I’ve been using mullvad for years now. I can’t recommend it enough. I travel a fair bit for work and it’s a must in certain countries and certain hotel chains that have horrible privacy reputations.

I love seeing this. This is where the pudding is made. Invention, development, training and inference is all very expensive. Past generation AI assistants (Alexa, GHome) failed to find a way to monetize, and the balance between utility and privacy was simply not there, which meant that they didn't make for a decent long term business, so they all had to downsize like crazy. Right now only Infrastructure folks have a sustainable business here, and the fact that OpenAI is pitching to publishers this early (still beginning of the 'S curve') means that they are serious about making this a sustainable long term business. As 'early adopters' move into something new (look ma, a new toy!), it will be fascinating to see how OpenAI (and others?) keep a balance between paid customers, top of funnel (free + ads?) and opex.

I honestly don’t know what this means. Is it faster? Is it more secure? Why would I use this vDPA thing instead of the good’ol virtio blk driver? Looking at the examples it certainly looks more cumbersome to setup…

I have my car (Subaru) hooked to an automation with home assistant. Several, actually. I can start the car in winter by pushing a button in my kitchen, heat it up, and then walk there. But the most important one is that I can turn the car off remotely as well, based on timers and automations. I generally don’t buy the ‘we should not allow this or that because it can be dangerous’. I’m a big boy. Driving is even more dangerous always. Let me choose. Please.

Security is always a compromise. If you want to access your homelab from outside (eg keep your documents in own hands), you have to open a way. Opening your own VPN endpoint or an SSH port is also non-zero risk, imho
